The Rise of Digital Team Building

D

ramatic shifts in business models, the nature of
work, and employee expectations have placed team
dynamics at the epicenter of organizational potential. High-performing companies are reaching for agility and
flexibility, replacing hierarchies with team-centric models.1
As networks of teams become the fundamental building
blocks of organizations, effective collaboration stands out as
a key component of company performance. Studies demonstrate the rising importance of collaboration; a 2015 survey
of knowledge workers reveals that over 90 percent collaborate
on a weekly basis, with 65 percent collaborating multiple
times each day.2 Organizations are taking notice, with "agility
and collaboration" cited as critical to success by 94 percent
of companies surveyed in Deloitte's Human Capital Trends
Report.1
In a world where collaboration is vital, there is an imperative to understand and invest in drivers of effective teamwork.
Google studied this question with its Project Aristotle, an

analysis of 180 teams testing hypotheses about which team
attributes matter most. This research surfaced "psychological
safety"-the ability to comfortably take risks and voice opinions on a team-as one of the primary determinants of team
effectiveness. Teams with high levels of psychological safety
and trust outperform revenue targets by 17 percent.3 Google's
research shows that teammate relationships are the foundation of organizational performance, putting heft behind the
intuitive insight that fostering openness and trust on teams is
a worthwhile investment.
Leaders on the hook for performance aren't the only ones
who care about team dynamics. Many of us have experienced
firsthand how the relationships we form in the workplace can
bring us fulfillment: the satisfaction or joy of being understood, connected, and comfortable being ourselves at work.
Just as many have experienced the flipside: the disenchantment or even misery when workplace relationships are devoid
of trust and empathy. Relationships at work matter because
