Challenges for Top Management Teams:
Fractures, Retention, and Strategy Execution
By Bradley Winn

T

he top management team
(TMT) is seen as the most powerful team in an organization.
These teams are ultimately responsible
for allocating resources, coordinating
operations, leading the workforce, and
importantly, setting the strategic direction for the company. As a team, the
TMT also has a significant impact on
a company's climate and culture-the
"way things work around here."
What typically unites the TMT is a
desire to improve the company, better
serve customers and stakeholders, solve
problems, increase profits, and make
a positive difference in the world. Yet
anyone who has served in the C-suite
knows that top management teams are
not short on executives with strong
personalities. In fact, more often than
not, TMT meetings are usually energized with fiercely held ideas, conflicting interests, and vigorous competing
agendas.
What divides the TMT may be an
individual member's unique world
view, access to different information,
different goals based on respective
responsibilities, and diverse background experiences. These background
experiences influence their thinking
about what works and what doesn't.
Divisions can occur based on individual
needs and personal career interests. Of
course, different points of view are also
influenced by age, gender, race, and a
myriad of other demographics.
A united front from the executive
team is usually what occurs after vigorous debate, discussion, and internal
negotiations. As the saying goes, "What
happens in the C-suite stays in the
C-suite." TMTs typically try to speak
with one voice once a decision has been
made.
Yet there are times when divisions
within the TMT are not so veiled.
