People & Strategy Spring 2018 Vol. 41 No. 2 - 7

last three papers. Gordon Curphy and
Dianne Nilsen are deeply experienced
consultants and have a tough, pointed
view about team building. They pull
no punches in describing how simple-and yet how rare-effective team
development is.
Diving deeper, Scott Tannenbaum,
Eduardo Salas, and Denise Reyes
highlight a practice that the best teams
use-debriefing. I described above how
poor most organizations are at helping
teams become good-and when you
think about it, the best teams become
great because they learn from their
experiences and make adjustments.
They self-correct. All professional
sports teams do this to obsession (video
playback, individual player stats, metrics for every conceivable act) yet it is

done rarely or worse, half-heartedly, in
organizational settings. For shame.
Our final article describes the pioneering work done by two entrepreneurial women in creating a digital teambuilding platform. Alison Bloom-Feshbach
and Marie Poyet outline the incredible
promise of technology in helping team
to flourish. Their approach offers significant hope to building effective virtual
teams and opens a window into the near
future. Expect to see technology become
the medium through which teamwork
operates.
I was very lucky to interview top
team researcher Suzanne Bell for In
First Person. Reflecting on her work for
NASA, Bell nails the conflict organizations face: "...a common mistake is
to organize work around teams but to

keep HR practices such as selection,
training, and compensation focused on
individuals."
The challenges for top management
teams (TMTs) are explored by Brad
Winn in Linking Theory + Practice as he
reports on research showing faultlines
in top-level strategy implementation.
Teams will always be with us-which
may be why we don't do them as well
as we could. But these articles provide
a timely collection of how we can do
teams better.
