nonprofits, small business and local governments in the areas of the environment, tourism, health care, the arts and social services. Liane McCarthy, who always has stories of her latest travels and adventures, wrote from Madrid, Spain, where she is as assistant legal attaché with the FBI. Liane said, “Madrid is a fantastic city. I only wish I had more time to get out and see everything!” Her job also covers Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar. She is searching for Milagros Sicilia Nistal, who was the exchange student in the Spanish House at Hood. Liane spoke to Sharon Carnevale Schopfer ’83 before she left. Sharon is trying to sell her house in Houston and move back to Delaware. Her three kids are so grown up! Susie Hiles Giallonardo inspired me with her note about how Amy Blades Stewart and Lisa Spuria kept her going during the last two years after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She said that “hopefully I have turned the corner as a survivor.” Facebook has enabled her to keep in touch with Lisa Spuria, Amy Blades Stewart, Leslie Morgan Seidel, Leigh Moomaw McBride ’81 and Lari George Leiby. Her daughter Dana just graduated from Lehigh Univ. and is off to Duquesne Law School this fall. Her son is a junior at Westminster College in Pennsylvania and her youngest daughter is a junior at Seacrest Country Day in Naples, Fla. She celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary with her husband Mark this June and decided to shake things up a bit and relocate with his company to Naples. I still live in Maryland and we just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and my 50th birthday. We have one daughter who is in college in North Carolina and another daughter in high school. It has been wonderful to hear from so many classmates. Please continue to send me your news!

in Moorestown, N.J. I’m still working as program administrator for South Jersey Select Lacrosse. My oldest daughter Kathryn just finished her sophomore year at Haverford College and is going to study abroad in Prague in the fall. My son Rusty is graduating high school and will attend Cabrini College in the fall. My youngest daughter Elizabeth is finishing her sophomore year of high school and is keeping me busy with all of her field hockey and lacrosse activities.” Also reporting in was Antje Borchmann Schneider who wrote, “My granddaughter Tori J. Weaver, daughter of Bruce D. Weaver and Mary Margaret Murphy Weaver ’85, graduated with highest honors from Linganore High School in Maryland May 25. She sang a very beautiful solo as part of the graduation exercises. I love my life in Surprise, Ariz., and enjoy volunteering as a master gardener but like getting back ‘home’ to Maryland every once in a while.” Here in Richmond, I am preparing for a visit from my Hood roomie, Deborah Single Hays and her family. We have big plans to go watch Richmond’s newest AA baseball team, The Flying Squirrels. Keep sending your news. We love hearing from you! Your faithful class reporter, Mary Townley.

She earned her master’s degree in guidance counseling in 1992 and went on to earn her certification as a pupil personnel worker, and has been working as such ever since. Brenda was remarried in 2006 to husband Randy in Magen’s Bay, St. Thomas. Sons Kyle and Luke are both in high school, with Kyle graduating in June 2010. Suzanne Spilman Smith reported from Stafford, Va., that she and her husband, Michael, are raising a 6-month-old German Shepherd named Bruno. Suzanne works for the federal government and keeps busy with dog training, travel and work. Suzanne would love to hear from any fellow Hoodlums in the Virginia area. Jennifer Julian Radcliffe is currently living in Northern Virginia and teaching the P-K program at a local preschool. Her husband Roy retired from the Navy but still currently works for the Navy. Son Andrew graduated from the USNA two years ago, got his wings in January and is now a Navy P-3 pilot stationed in Jacksonville, Fla. Daughter Claire is a senior at the College of William & Mary and is a history major who has been working for the Army for the past three summers. Army/Navy game time is interesting in the Radcliffe household. We are sending our condolences to Barbara Reade Hawkins and family on the sudden loss of her father in November 2009. Barb and her husband, Sgt. Maj. Rick Hawkins, live and work in the Woodbridge, Quantico, Va., area and are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary! Congrats to both of them! Sgt. Maj. Hawkins retired from the Marine Corps after 32 years of service to our country. He will continue to work with the Marines as a MAGTF mentor/instructor with the Marine Corps Univ. Jan Carey MacGillivray reported in from Massachusetts. She married Scott MacGillivray in 1994. Together they have co-authored

a book called “Gloria Jean: A Little Bit of Heaven,” a book-length biography and filmography of a motionpicture singer and actress of the 1940s. Jan has also assisted her husband with four other books he has written—editing the manuscripts and preparing photos and text for publication. As time permits, Jan records books for LibriVox, an online group of volunteers who are dedicated to producing audio books of all literature in the public domain. Jan also is currently employed in the production studio of an advertising/digital agency. Daphne Byrd Gabb checked in from Middletown, Md. Daphne and her family hosted an exchange student from Denmark during the past year. They have enjoyed showing her an American teen’s life and have taken her on trips to Williamsburg, Va., New York, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Indiana. Daphne currently works at Lockheed Martin doing programming but spends much of her time volunteering at her children’s schools (Middletown Middle and Middletown High). Last year Daphne volunteered more than 1,200 hours mostly working with the schools’ PTAs. Daphne is currently the president of the Frederick County PTA Council and the president of the Main Street Middletown Board of Directors. Daphne laments that she can’t believe it has been 26 years since we graduated. We can’t be that old can we? Sue Sutton Bartolotto is enjoying being back in the D.C. area after living overseas for five years. She has recently been in contact with several classmates—Joyce Harris Steedman, Edie Orazi, Natasha Keyian and Evy Hoban. Thanks to all who have sent in news and information! Please feel free to send an update at any time to susankle@ comcast.net or find me on Facebook! Have a safe and enjoyable summer everyone!

Mary Townley 317 Huddersfield Drive Richmond, VA 23236 hoodmlt@aol.com Hello Class of 1983! I (Mary Townley) heard from several of our classmates for this column. Jacque Witt Lyons wrote, “My younger daughter Bethany is graduating from Towson Univ. with a bachelor’s degree in finance, in August. My son (the baby of the family) graduated from Kent Island High School. He will be going to Neumann Univ. in August. My oldest daughter Allison is engaged and is getting married in February. I am still working as the HR director for Habitat America, headquartered in Annapolis, Md. Ed is still director of software development for Monticello Software. When we are not working, we are watching our son play baseball or visiting with our daughters.” I also heard from Sue Bridgers who commented, “I’m now working part time as the executive director of the Chatham County (N.C.) Literacy Council, a nonprofit organization that provides free tutoring in reading, writing and math to adults. We also provide ESL and Spanish basic literacy classes. Loving it! Daughter Caleigh graduates from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., in December with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design, and currently interns at Raleigh Denim, a high-end jeans designer that supplies Barney’s of New York.” Shelley Wagar Sabo reported, “I was able to see Lori Landis ’84 for dinner in Frederick recently. We went to Hood to hear Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of “Eat, Pray, Love,” speak. Lori is starting her own business—veterinarian house calls. We begin college visits for my daughter Courtney, who is finishing her junior year. I am getting ready to begin my second summer rowing in an adult league. My daughter is a varsity coxswain for her high school and got me hooked on this sport!” Suzanne Williams Johnson wrote, “Same old, same old, here

Sue Povich DelConte 960 New Dover Road Edison, NJ 08820 ahoodlumof85@hotmail.com By the time you all read this, the reunion will be a memory. Due to family issues I (Sue Povich DelConte) was unable to attend this past get together but Marsha Evans, our class’ reunion chair, graciously volunteered to supply this issue’s column with all the news. She wrote, “Vibrant, exciting, reminiscent … yet new—the adjectives could go on and on for what was the most perfect Reunion Weekend at Hood. Immediately evident was the enormous amount of planning by the alumni office to pull off such a well-organized and well-attended event. From ceramics classes, wine journeys, coffee and champagne receptions, a twop-mile run/walk with the President, campus and historic Frederick tours, reunion dinners, and a dance party on the Meyran porch (with a DJ!), to Sunday’s strawberry breakfast … we enjoyed the great company of our ’85 classmates and other classes throughout the weekend … taking advantage of a variety of activities that Hood so thoughtfully planned and executed. We marveled at the gorgeous Whitaker Campus Center, Hodson Science and Technology Center, Beneficial-Hodson Library, and Nicodemus Athletic Complex (many of us seeing these buildings for the first time), and learned of the plan for a new gymnasium to be constructed behind Coblentz (to the right of the new/impressive athletic complex). We all commented on the sheer beauty of the campus with so much gorgeous, lush landscaping and mature trees and, of course, we found numerous opportunities to relax and hang out under the Pergola! My Friday night kicked off with a fun dinner at La Paz with my best Hood chums Trisha Wilson Wisner ’83, Krista Stone Steiding and Deborah CrawfordReynolds (and her husband Dale and daughter Victo-
