Math Professor Earns Service Award
A longtime Hood professor was honored with an award for meritorious service from the leading professional association in collegiate mathematics. Betty Mayfield, Ph.D., professor of mathematics and chair of the department, was awarded a Certificate of Meritorious Service from the Mathematical Association of America for service to that organization at the national and regional levels. Mayfield served as the MAA’s first vice president and has led or served on several Mayfield of the organization’s committees. She is a dedicated consultant and founder of Project NExT, MAA’s professional development program for new or recent doctoral degree recipients in mathematical sciences. She also served as governor, chair and newsletter editor of the association’s Maryland-District of Columbia-Virginia Section.

Funk, Derr Retire After Years of Distinguished Service
Two long-serving members of the Hood community retired recently. Robert N. Funk, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs, retired after 10 years of service to the College. Joy Derr, M.A. ’93, C’03, director of campaign communications, retired in May after 34 years of service to the College during the past five decades. Funk Funk was appointed interim president for one year before serving nine years as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Under his leadership the College added to its curriculum three undergraduate majors, six minors and two certificates, as well as seven master’s degrees and four post-baccalaureate certificates. During Funk’s tenure the College met two significant academic milestones: an intensive and successful review for reaccreditation by the Middle States Derr Commission on Higher Education, which accredits degree-granting colleges and universities in five states, two territories, the District of Columbia and several international locations; and accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the premier national teacher education accreditation organization. In honor of Funk’s dedication to the Hood community and his enthusiastic support for faculty research, the College established The Robert N. Funk Fund for Faculty Research and Travel. Derr joined the Hood staff as director of public information in 1966. She had more than 16 different job titles, including director of development communications, associate director of academic services and chief information officer, and served for 15 years as editor of the Hood Magazine. Derr managed the Hood College Board of Associates. Under her leadership, the McCardell Professional Development Grants program grew to annually support faculty summer research projects. She was also instrumental in developing the Hood College Museum, which opened in 2007 and houses Hood memorabilia, and coordinated the museum docent program.
