Warning: Potential Design and
Print Delays in 2017

emand for design and print work could increase next year as the food industry redesigns and prints new labels as required
under the Nutritional Labeling Education Act. To prevent any disruptions, ILMA members may want to plan for longer lead
times and potential delays as they look to their own print and design needs.
"If you're going to be flooding the market with an entire label change, it sucks up all of the resources in the marketplace, from printing
presses to designers to engineers," said Joan Ziegler, key accounts manager at Gamse Lithographing Co. Inc., based in Baltimore,
Maryland. "This is the time that large food companies decide, 'If I am going to redesign my labeling for the nutritional facts, I might as
well do everything else.'"
When a major change goes through the printing and design pipeline, it affects all of the surrounding areas, Ziegler explained. "It will
impact people who don't have to make that change but need printing every day," she said.
Andy Rapp, a senior account executive with WS Packaging, based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, said the company is ramping up to meet
increased demand and working to get the word out that there could be a trickle-down effect for any company that needs print and
design work next year. "From our perspective, our customer base covers a breadth of industries - food, automotive, lubricants -
consequently there are a lot of other big printers in the same boat," he said.
Food manufacturers with revenues of $10 million or more have to be in compliance no later than July 26, 2018, but Rapp said most will
meet the new requirements well ahead of that, which means the bulk of the work will be done next year. "Many companies are already
starting, and we're already getting inquiries," he said.
Joel Schmidt, market development manager for the Outlook Group, based in Neenah, Wisconsin, also expects to see a spike in
demand as companies begin working on new label designs in 2017. He said, "It is always good to plan ahead and start early to allow for
the inevitable delays."
Ziegler said many people use the same
printing presses, designers and quality
engineers, which is why the impact is
so great. Among printers, there is huge
consolidation within the industry, and
so there are only a handful of domestic
printers. "When these bubbles come
through, it taxes the system and then the
customers involved," Ziegler said.
Designers can also be in high demand.
Because food manufacturers have
to make changes to the nutritional
information, they often use it as a catalyst
to make a complete design change.
