THE WHITE PAPER

Promoting Safety During
the Holidays
Eugene M. White, Ph.D., M.S., CMFS

A

s the year starts to wind down and the last few pages
of the 2016 calendar are sequentially flipped over, we
all tend to start thinking about various joyful holiday
gatherings with family, friends and co-workers, when we
participate in celebratory events. However, the often-quoted
workplace slogan is especially apropos during this special time
of the year, i.e., "Safety Takes No Holiday." Therefore, all workers
should be mindful of these words both at home and on the
job, as thoughts of often frantic holiday activities, logistics
and myriad details swirl around in our heads as we plan and
anticipate special times of the year.

On the Job
Occasional daydreaming is not an unusual activity at work, but
it can pose occupational safety hazards at times, especially
when "visions of sugar plums dance in our heads." For instance,
production personnel who operate heavy machinery or
mechanized shop utility vehicles may want to delay the
contemplation of the all-important guest list for Thanksgiving
dinner until break time. The latter discretion also applies to
other critical work practices that require attention to work tasks
involving the performance of production-line work where fine
motor control is needed.

Traveling to, From and for Work
Most people have to drive to get to work and then, afterward,
return home. We all know that there are traffic distractions
galore on every roadway that require our full attention to
negotiate them successfully and safely. Add the preoccupation
with thoughts of holiday happenings to our usual palate of
mental musings during the usual commute to work and the
return trip home (seemingly catatonic at times), and there is
an increased chance for vehicle accidents. Also, the months
of November and December, especially, in many parts of the
country tend to usher inclement weather onto our landscapes,
bringing adverse road conditions that require our full and
undistracted (and unimpaired) driving skills. The National Safety
Council presents some helpful tips and grim statistics about
holiday driving.1
I was once told by a salesman that he regularly drove at least
50,000 miles a year in a company car, and that much of the
mileage was logged during the last quarter of the year when
he wrapped up business and customer goodwill calls prior
to the holidays. For those who must drive as a regular part of
their occupational duties, overall good health, guarding against
fatigue and planning trips to avoid unnecessary rushing are
important factors. Arriving at an account on time is always
important, but returning home safely should be the primary
thought.
