If they couldn't find any proof of wrongdoing by the industry,
they'd create their own standards of malfeasance.
who ostensibly signed up for a multistate investigation into what
"Exxon knew" about anthropogenic climate change.
Almost immediately, however, editorial boards and other freespeech advocates across the country lashed out at the attorneys
general for using the power of the subpoena to stifle free speech.
Many of them sharply criticized the effort to compare oil and
natural gas to tobacco.
Attorneys general from 13 other states weighed in with a letter
to their counterparts, calling the Exxon investigation "a grave mistake" and asking the AGs to "stop policing viewpoints."
And when Schneiderman failed to produce the damning "internal documents" and his investigation started to look more like a
fishing expedition, most of the other AGs bowed out, forcing him
to shift his focus from what Exxon knew about climate change in
the past to what they predict climate change might do to the value
of the company in the future.
Environmental activists, however, were undeterred. If they
couldn't find any proof of wrongdoing by the industry, they'd
create their own standards of malfeasance. Enter the Climate
Accountability Scorecard: Ranking Major Fossil Fuel Companies on
Climate Deception, Disclosure, and Action.
The Climate Accountability Scorecard - created by the Union
of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the activist group that organized
the 2012 La Jolla conference - rates eight of the nation's largest

publicly traded oil-, gas- and coal-producing companies on how
well they are doing the activists' jobs for them. Among the petrochemical companies targeted are Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, Royal
Dutch Shell and ConocoPhillips.
According to Kathy Mulvey, co-author of the report, "As far
as the objective of ranking the companies, we are looking to put
concrete and specific actions and recommendations in front of
these companies to which they can be held accountable by their
investors, by policy makers, by the public."
The Scorecard uses four criteria to grade these companies so that
the public in general - and shareholders in particular - can take
action against the targeted companies.
* Are these companies supporting every activist-endorsed effort
supposedly aimed at stopping climate change?
* Have they renounced trade associations that put out information
that questions the policy prescriptions that these activists support?
* Have they fully disclosed how the activists' worst-case scenarios
will affect the future value of their stock?
* Have they developed a plan to downsize their operations sufficiently to comply with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement
of 2016?
The Scorecard is so prescriptive that it even downgrades companies for their affiliation with groups that UCS finds offensive,
