Future Focus: Big Data, Driverless Cars
and Maintenance 4.0

This month's ILMA Management Forum is helping lubricant executives "future-proof " their companies with advice
from Jack Uldrich, the global futurist, best-selling author
and conference keynote speaker.
Likewise, the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication
Engineers (STLE) is also talking about and thinking about
how our organization and its science-and-technology-focused
members might need to adjust and adapt to developments
such as big data and the internet of things. This data explosion offers opportunities for innovation and productivity, but
also presents many challenges to conventional thinking.

Dr. Robert Gresham, recently wrote about the implications of
the concept known as Maintenance 4.0, also in TLT Magazine:

Take, for example, the introduction of driverless cars.
STLE President Dr. Ali Erdemir, a Distinguished Fellow
at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, explained
in a recent issue of STLE's TLT Magazine how the field of
tribology can continue to play a crucial role as the mobility
business enters a new era. Here's a portion of what he wrote:
"It is important to remember that while these vehicles
may be driverless, they will never be frictionless or immune
to wear and tear because every mobile system generates
some friction and is subject to adhesion, abrasion and,
hence, wear. Specifically, many moving mechanical parts in
these vehicles - together with all of those micro-electromechanical systems, sensors and actuators which decipher
digital commands and turn them into mechanical action
and automation - will require advanced tribological
designs and high-performance materials and lubricants to
