sensors on critical equipment and through so-called Big
Data analysis that determines more precise trending and the
state of the equipment.
"In oil analysis, we (can) monitor not just the health
of the oil per se but, rather, the critical additive systems
in the oil as they begin to break down. Thus, the oil can
be changed before the machine actually sees degraded oil.
When one thinks of the enormous capital investment and
the equally enormous repair expense in (applications like)
large wind turbine farms, a Maintenance 4.0 approach
would seem the only logical method to manage these assets."
STLE cultivates our community of experts like Erdemir
and Gresham through a strategic plan process that emphasizes surveillance of technology and leadership discussion
of how to address those trends. Our strategic plan looks
to build an organization that will support individual and
corporate members as they grapple with the scientific and
technical challenges facing the tribology and lubricants
business.
An upcoming project inspired by that planning process
is a new version of STLE's Report on Emerging Issues and
Trends, which was released in 2014. As the name suggests,
this is a multiphase research effort to evaluate trends and
predict future developments affecting tribology and lubrication engineering. The report documents the vast economic
and commercial impact of the science in terms of reduced
energy use, lower costs of equipment maintenance and

replacement, new technology development and solutions
to resource problems, such as the lack of clean water. The
research projects that the dollar value of that impact is likely
more than $400 billion annually in the U.S. and up to $2
trillion globally.
The updated Emerging Issues and Trends Report will serve
as a refresh to the previous edition, but it will also act as a
new report that illustrates emerging trends, builds compelling narratives about the industry and acts as an effective
vehicle for communicating inside and outside the tribology and lubrication industry. One area getting increased
attention is internal friction at the molecular level. This
phenomenon is regarded as a key to better understanding
of lubricant additive technology. The new report is scheduled for release in September 2017.
ILMA members can also still download a free copy of
the original 2014 report, and an Industry Leader Predictions
companion report, by going to the STLE website at
www.stle.org. STLE looks forward to continuing collaboration with ILMA as we play our respective roles in
making sure that the future is bright for people in the
tribology and lubricants business.
Salek is executive director of STLE.
