LETTER FROM THE CEO

Notes from UEIL: It's a Small World

hortly after we wrapped up the ILMA Annual Meeting, a small contingent of
members and I headed over to Europe to attend the Union of the European
Lubricants Industry (UEIL) Annual Congress. Fresh in my mind were all the
concerns we discussed at the ILMA Annual Meeting: new mobility trends such as
electrification and autonomous vehicles; development of new manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing; the push to refine lubricant specifications to meet fuel
economy standards; the focus on quality; and ethics among independents.
As the UEIL Congress got underway, I was not surprised to hear the themes
from ILMA's meeting repeated. Lubricant manufacturers across the globe are
grappling with a rapidly changing world. Whether it's a question of the impact of
3D printing on metalworking fluids, or the debate about the continued viability
of internal combustion engines, or the availability of various raw materials, it's
important that the industry leadership around the world regularly come together
and address these issues head-on.
I was also struck by the fact that the political issues we face in the U.S. are
remarkably similar to European issues. While ILMA closely monitors the Trump
administration's attempted renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Europeans are holding their breath as the U.K. proceeds with
Brexit. The immigration issues that dominate news at home are as incendiary in
Europe and certain to be costly for mainstream politicians in future elections.
And, like the U.S., all eyes are on the numbers - various indexes and barometers
that gauge recovery from the global recession that hit in 2008.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, a new association is coming to life.
In the next year, we anticipate the launch of the Asian Lubricant Manufacturers
Union (ALMU). ILMA is working closely with founders to support the development of this important new group. Stay tuned for additional information in the
months to come.
On the homefront, ILMA is ratcheting up its focus on global issues with the
formation of an International Affairs Committee (IAC). I invite you to join us for
an organizational meeting of the IAC on Committee Day, April 19, at the upcoming Management Forum in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Watch your email for details
or feel free to send me an email if you are interested in participating.
The takeaway from these many developments is that ILMA and its counterparts
around the world must stay connected and share information and ideas. While
there's no easy answer to a number of the challenges we face, working together is
far more productive than working alone.
