LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

ILMA, Asia and Beyond

s president of ILMA's Board of Directors, one of my main priorities
has been to seek out opportunities to expand our international
reach. Our industry is a global industry, and our members do
business all over the world. We have worked closely with UEIL (Union
of the European Lubricants' Industry), but there has been no centralized
Asian association until now. I was honored to attend the kickoff in Macao,
Southern China, that formally launched the Asian Lubricant Manufacturers
Union (ALMU) in March.
Launching ALMU has been a work in progress for several years, and a
number of ILMA's members have been very involved in getting it off the
ground. The kickoff meeting was attended by lubricant association leadership from around the world, and it was inspiring to see how those of us
within the industry can support each other on a global scale.
Asia is an important market for many of our businesses, and we will all
benefit from having an association in place there. Like ILMA, ALMU will
focus on quality. It will have a code of ethics, which will provide value for
the industry as a whole and protect its members by only inviting quality
companies to join the association.
Our objective as an association is to support ALMU and provide strong
alignment. Getting involved with ALMU will also give us an opportunity
to not only understand who the key players are in Asia, but also gain insight
on how to do business in certain countries. A lot of countries have restrictions or requirements from a formulary standpoint that wouldn't be known
if you were an outsider.
ALMU membership will further the industry development, and I encourage our supplier and manufacturing members to show their support by
joining the association. ALMU's inaugural meeting will take place in November, and I hope ILMA will send notable representation. We are more effective
when we join together. We all have our own associations, and when we attach
ourselves to each other, we can benefit from a wider body of knowledge.
In addition to supporting ALMU, ILMA has created the Global Affairs
and Trade Committee, which we kicked off earlier this year. Not all of us
can attend meetings abroad, but we want to be able to learn from those
who do, and the committee will provide the foundation for our members to
bring back and share what they learn. Those within the committee will also
seek out subject matter experts within our areas of operation and tap into
their expertise to benefit our Association as a whole.
The value of knowledge is made even greater when it is shared, and ILMA
is making great strides to ensure we're sharing it as broadly as possible.
