STLE Takes Steps to
Improve Workforce
Replacement
By Ed Salek

O

ur organization, the Society of Tribologists and
Lubrication Engineers (STLE), regularly surveys
the industry about challenges that impact the
field. In the most recent study, 2017 Report on Emerging
Issues and Trends, the more than 900 participants once
again pointed to workforce replacement and development
as the overriding concern for companies in the tribology
and lubrication engineering business sector. There is a great
concern that the field might not be able to replace the
workers who are retiring or who plan to retire in the future,
according to the study.
The report emphasizes two ways that the industry can
respond to this situation. The first is through initiatives
aimed at attracting talent to tribology and lubrication
engineering. For STLE, these initiatives include funding
scholarships and project grants, supporting students attending conferences and encouraging student chapters. Clearly,
ILMA has made a similar commitment to support students
through its expanded Scholarship Program. Outreach by
groups such as STLE, ILMA and others to students and
faculty members is already expanding the talent pool for
companies that need to replace key members of their technical, marketing or management team.
The second area of emphasis is to provide continuing professional development opportunities to individuals already
working with the development, production, marketing and
use of tribology-related products and lubricants. Over the
past few years, STLE has bolstered its education programs
by adding numerous resources that the industry can utilize
as training options.
Topping the list is Learning Pathways, an online resource
library that helps technical professionals align and target
their education and career development needs. Learning

Pathways includes content resources from hundreds of articles from STLE's Tribology & Lubrication Technology (TLT)
magazine, in-person courses, webinars, short courses and
books. The information is organized into two job classifications: lubrication specialist (involved with the evaluation
and selection of proper lubricants as well as troubleshooting
lubrication problems) and oil analyst (responsible for oil
sampling, review of oil analysis reports and overall care of
equipment).
To aid in the learning process, the majority of the references are filtered by key subject areas in which a lubrication
specialist or oil analyst would need to have in-depth knowledge. These areas are further divided into references that are
categorized into three levels:
* Basic: Information required to develop and understand
the foundation of the key subject area.
* Intermediate: Information that typically would be
required to be relatively competent in that key
subject area.
* Advanced: Knowledge beyond what would normally be
required that would be useful for job-specific requirements and duties.
You can access the Learning Pathways through the STLE
website, www.stle.org. Much of the material is available
at no charge, but there are portions restricted to STLE
members only.
STLE educational offerings also include regional live short
courses conducted in locations across the U.S. Foundations
of Lubrication Engineering, a popular course introduced
in 2017, is intended for individuals new to the lubrication
industry or for those taking on added job responsibilities.
The course is built around seven key subject areas: base oils,
additives, friction and tribology, grease, hydraulics, gears
and bearings.
STLE's Metalworking Fluid Management Course is a
2½-day education course that offers a solid overview of
metalworking fluid management. It is tailored to provide
industry professionals with a comprehensive look at the
latest techniques and practices that pertain to metalworking
fluid operations. The course covers 16 topics and engages
participants in case studies to solidify their knowledge after
learning important concepts.
