ICIS LAYS OUT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN BASE OILS AND
LUBRICANTS INDUSTRY
John Baker, global editor custom publishing at ICIS, writes in a paper, ICIS Base
Oils & Lubricants 2018, "Base oil markets are at an interesting juncture, giving
players plenty of cause for thought and reflection." ICIS reports that higher fuel
economy standards are causing an increase in demand for lower-viscosity motor
oils formulated with Group III and IV base oils. Other factors affecting the market are an expanding demand for electric vehicles, sulfur limits in marine shipping
and high-productivity manufacturing equipment, which drives adoption of Group
III, III+ and synthetics. (Read more on the base oils market from ICIS, page 16.)

NIGERIAN OFFICIALS WELCOME LUBRICANT SELLERS BUT WARN
COUNTERFEITERS
According to a report in The Nation, the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON)
is encouraging the lubricants industry to leverage opportunities created by the 2003
Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP) to revitalize the region's
auto industry. However, there were also stern warnings issued to those dealing in counterfeit products. "SON will not sit back and watch some unscrupulous people threaten
the lives of the industry. We will not sit down and watch these people pull down the
investment of genuine manufacturers or importers. As long as you are law-abiding, we
will be there to protect you," said SON Director General Osita Aboloma.
DANA ANNOUNCES NEW DRIVE AXLE FOR CLASS 7 AND 8 VEHICLES
Dana announced its new Spicer S172 series single-drive axle for Class 7 and 8
vehicles at the Technology & Maintenance Council's annual meeting in Atlanta.
Dana has reduced the weight of the existing S170 axle by more than 60 pounds. A
company news release states that the high-strength pinion bearings allow for greater
life span under heavy loads, improving durability and overall performance. In
addition, a passive lubricant management system requires less lube while utilizing a
patented meter to optimize the amount of lube flow to the high-efficiency bearings.
NEW FLUID DYNAMICS SIMULATION TOOL BOOSTS ANALYSIS OF
LUBRICATION FLOW
Drive System Design (DSD), Altair and FluiDyna have joined forces to develop
a new computer modeling technique dubbed nanoFluidX, which they say will significantly improve the analysis of lubrication flow. NanoFluidX is a particle-based
fluid dynamics simulation tool used to predict the flow in complex geometries
with complex motion. It can be used to predict the oiling in powertrain systems
with rotating shafts or gears and analyze forces and torques on individual components of the system.
