a precision that is not offered by the less-uniform coating
of MoS2, according to the article. So, an innovative niche
product opened the industry to a cheaper alternative but has
since proved that innovation is still needed to meet performance demands.

Keeping track of so many innovations
and trends can sound daunting
and costly to manufacturers that
are trying to maintain their known
commodities.

Another recent example was explored in a July 2017
Compoundings article titled "Gliding into the Future:
Improved Army Maintenance Procedures Can Mean Big
Changes for Lubricant Industry." The Army researched
options to reduce the maintenance required when using a
wet lubricant on rifles. In this case, the wet lubricant was a
cleaner, lubricant and preservative (CLP), and extreme environments and infrequent maintenance were contributing to
weapon stoppages in both Afghanistan and Iraq. The Army
decided to utilize a durable solid lubricant (DSL) applied
during manufacturing to replace the CLP. Again, what was
once a necessary and reliable product and market became an
opportunity for a nontraditional lubricant.

Innovative Designs
Judith Taylor is senior editor manager at ICIS, the world's
largest petrochemical market information provider. She sees a
link between the dry lubricant market and recent changes in
technology, such as electric cars and in the aerospace industry.
"Innovative engine designs will be needed to put vehicles
into operation on the highways of tomorrow," she said.
Taylor emphasized that the designs are not waiting on
manufacturers - innovation is going to happen whether
companies participate or not.
"Tomorrow is not 25 years off - maybe 10, or could be
less. So, when the subject of dry lubes comes up, it cannot
be dismissed," Taylor said. She reminded that "motor oils
of 5W-20 and 5W-30 are on the shelves now," already an
indication of the rapid changes to the lubrication industry.
She suggested that "dry lubes that are sprayed onto surfaces
during factory-fill might be the next step."
Taylor believes that methods that utilize molecular,
single-molecule techniques, such as sprays that are made to
adhere without update changes in sealed-engine formats,
should be considered a possibility soon. Additionally, "nanospray lubes might emerge and be tagged 'dry' since there is
no fluid involved, or these could bond with the metals for
another level of lubrication to reduce friction in the engine,
transmission and gear parts," she said.
Finally, Taylor also sees aerospace as an industry to watch.
She reminded that "futuristic, passenger-car engine designs
are already on the workbench" and not to forget "the space
industry and its requirements, since some [companies]
designing new vehicles are also designing transportation to
head for other planets."
Keeping track of so many innovations and trends can
sound daunting and costly to manufacturers that are trying
to maintain their known commodities. However, there are
strategic approaches for companies to consider when they
are concerned with trends and changes in their industry.
