HONDA RECALLS 350,000 CARS IN CHINA
In May, Honda announced a recall of about 350,000 automobiles in China. The
CR-V sport utility vehicle and the Civic car equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo engine
were recalled due to an unusual amount of uncombusted fuel collecting in the
engine's lubricant oil pan. The issue appeared to be isolated to northern China,
where temperatures dip below the freezing point, and in instances where the
vehicles were driven for short distances frequently. Honda engineers thought the
engine was not warming up enough to assist uncombusted fuel accumulated in the
lubricant oil pan to evaporate.
JOINT STUDY INVESTIGATES STERN TUBE BEARING FAILURES
ABS, in partnership with Vickers Oils and Imperial College London, completed
a joint study on the use of environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) on stern
tube bearings. Since 2014, following the advent of the 2013 Vessel General Permit
(VGP) requiring the use of EALs, ship owners and operators have been reporting
an increase in stern tube bearing failures. The study evaluated EAL properties relative to mineral oil-based lubricants and concluded that oil viscosity is the primary
property considered in selecting an EAL. The study did not find that EALs were
responsible for the reported stern tube bearing failures, or that if mineral oils were
used, the failures could have been prevented.
GEORGIA-PACIFIC OPENS SUPPLY CHAIN INNOVATION CENTER
In June, Georgia‐Pacific opened Point A Center for Supply Chain Innovation at
Atlanta's TechSquare Labs. The center serves as a collaborative space for businesses
ranging from multinational corporations to academic institutions and startups.
Point A's members, which Georgia-Pacific is actively recruiting, will explore use
cases for applying Industry 4.0 innovations, including robotics, artificial intelligence, blockchain, machine learning and autonomous vehicles, among others, to
tackle some of the supply chain's most pressing challenges.
FRONTIERS IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LAUNCHES OPEN ACCESS
TRIBOLOGY JOURNAL
Tribology has evolved into a multidisciplinary field of study. To aid in the dissemination of information, Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering has launched
a specialty section, Tribology. Tribology will cover a broad and interdisciplinary
spectrum of topics connected with the mechanics and physics of interfaces in
natural, technical and biological systems. Editors hope the journal will enable
communication between field experts, scholars and researchers to facilitate a
general understanding of friction and wear relevant to many challenges faced by
engineers today.
