ITE NEWS
ATC 5201 Advanced Transportation Controller Standard v06 Jointly Approved
The ATC 5201 Advanced Transportation
Controller (ATC) Standard version 06 has
been jointly approved by the American
Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), ITE, and the
National Electrical Manufacturers Association
(NEMA). Transportation controllers adhering to ATC 5201 v06 provide a powerful,
on-street, computing platform for numerous
intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications including intersection control, ramp
metering, data collection, safety, connected
vehicles, and other applications. ATC 5201
v06 works together with ATC 5401 Application Programming Interface (API) Standard
v02 to allow application programs to share
the resources of the controller and the transportation field cabinet system.

ATC 5201 Standard v06 represents a significantly improved and clarified document over
the previous ATC Standard 5.2b. There were
303 comments submitted and adjudicated by
the Controller Working Group in the development of ATC 5201 v06. This provided valuable
feedback in identifying areas of its predecessor
that needed correction, further definition or
enhancement. Specific areas where the standard was enhanced are as follows:
1. Additional front matter and context
material was added to help users of the
standard;
2. Provisions were made for optional
secure digital card and controller area
network bus interfaces;
3. CoreMark benchmarks are now used
as a measure of central processing unit
(CPU) performance;

4.

5.

6.
7.

User interface elements and their
physical locations on ATC units have
been clarified;
Synchronous serial port features that
have been unused by the industry are
now optional;
Both Model 2070-like communications
expansion slots are now optional; and
Memory sections of the standard were
clarified and rewritten to not be overly
restrictive on the types of memory
technology used.

Speed Management ePrimer
for Rural Transition Zones
and Town Centers

Access Online

This new Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
resource is a website developed by ITE through an
FHWA contract. The e-Primer focuses specifically
on addressing speeding-related safety issues in
rural communities, complementing the FHWA
Traffic Calming ePrimer. It includes guidance on the
comprehensive rural speed management process, from
identifying potential hot spots, to implementing and
evaluating speeding countermeasures. The ePrimer
places particular emphasis on low-cost treatments
suitable for deployment in a rural environment, and
includes several case studies from rural communities
across the United States to illustrate the safety
improvement process.
