to school. The process has engaged young people in their neighborhood, encouraging them to get involved and take ownership in
shaping their neighborhood.
That's the beauty of Kitchener's resident-led traffic calming
program. From start to finish, the entire community is engaged
and leads the process, having important conversations and making
decisions that they feel will make our streets safer.
Kitchener's resident-led traffic calming program is just one year
old, but interest continues to grow as more people get involved.
When residents find out that they are able to propose traffic
solutions for their street-and receive helpful support from the
city-they experience the same excited enthusiasm as the grade five
students at Wilson Avenue Public School. We're looking forward
to seeing what ideas residents come up with next, and working
together to make those ideas a reality. itej

Darren Kropf works for the City of Kitchener, ON,
Canada in its Neighbourhood Development Office. He
creates resources and programs for Kitchener residents
to use when they want to make their neighborhood
even better. Since residents view their neighborhood
holistically-and not through municipal departmental
structures-he often works in collaboration across city departments.
He has found the best solutions are created when each department
brings their unique expertise to the table, along with a commitment to
work together and collaborate with the residents they serve.
Barry Cronkite, CET is a Certified Engineering
Technologist and manages the City of Kitchener's
Transportation Planning team where he has worked
for the past 18 years. His primary focus is traffic
calming, active transportation, and the safety of all
users within the municipal road allowance. Because
traffic calming is a big part of what he does, he used the resident-led
traffic calming program as an opportunity to introduce other staff
and residents of Kitchener to the traffic engineering field. He is a
member of ITE.
