help fund the initiatives that the credit
union wants to go after," says Stewart.
FCFCU President and CEO J. Kevin
Ryan notes that "Financial Center's
board of directors and senior management team work closely together to
improve the financial lives of the members we serve. It is a great partnership."
■■ More astute budgeters: Board members don't need to read every line item

in the CEO's budget, but they have
a duty to adequately fund the policy
priorities they set. Tschida's board
recently added an additional risk management position to its existing risk
management/compliance department,
addressing its concern that "so much
is going on with cybersecurity and
fraud." As Stewart put it, "Does the
board need to go out and read the regulations? Probably not. They just need
to know what it applies to within their
world and what their organization

needs from them to make sure they get
it implemented."
An engaged, competent board "really
does help set the direction for the credit
union and helps it be successful," says
Tschida. And even in the thickening
fog of regulatory requirements, a strong
board doesn't lose sight of its top priority, says Keneipp, who notes FCFCU's
nationally recognized financial literacy
program as an example of shared commitments among board and staff.
"Even though we're strong in the
financial area, we remind ourselves that
people are No. 1," he says. "How you
take care of your members and how you
take care of employees and staff is the
No. 1 thing."
