to go before people start flying fewer hours.” Then, there is the question of how many operators who dropped out of business aviation will return. “In 2009, we began to see a number of aircraft being sold or parked,” said Rasberry. “We don’t know how many of those operators will get back into flying. The answer will definitely impact the MRO business. It’s true, there will always be jets, but what’s not known is exactly how many.” Asked about the competition the company faces with airframe OEMowned MRO facilities for after-market

service, Rasberry noted that West Star Aviation has always competed with them. It’s just that the competitive dynamics have changed. “Given the state of the market today for new aircraft sales, the OEMs are more focused on getting all the maintenance business they can,” Rasberry said. “They won’t get it all; but at a time when new airframes are not selling, the OEMs are emphasizing their aftermarket support. When the new aircraft start selling again, they will turn their attention in that direction--selling aircraft

and building up a backlog of orders-and shift their focus away from maintenance.” Still, Rasberry pointed out, as more aircraft fill the OEM shops, more will be sent to independent MRO facilities, since at some point the manufacturers will not be able to accommodate them all. As West Star Aviation prepares to move into its second decade, the logical question is, Are there any new locations planned? “Not right now,” said Swehla. “But then, you never know what the next phone call will bring.”
