completed my obligation to the Navy
and decided to resign my commission.
Subsequently, I was interviewed
and hired by Delta Air Lines at the
end of 1987.
Is that also when you started your
career in the Air Force Reserve?
Yes. Delta had just opened a pilot
base in Cincinnati, where I grew up,
and it seemed like a great opportunity
to go back home, reconnect with
my family, and let my parents spend
some time with their grandchildren.

I learned that there was an Air Force
Reserve fighter squadron up the
road in Fairborn, Ohio, at WrightPatterson
Air Force Base, so I made
a couple of calls and inquired about
transferring to the Air Force Reserve.
I had flown Navy F-16Ns in San
Diego, and the Air Force Reserve
squadron was transitioning to F-16s,
so it was very good timing. I completed
the transfer to the Air Force
Reserve shortly after I got hired by
Delta, and spent another eighteen
years in that great organization. I
retired in 2006 as a colonel. Between
flying for Delta, flying in the Air Force
Reserve eight or nine days a month
and raising a young family, it was a
very busy time in my life.
You mentioned before that you
tend to view change as opportunity.
What was the jump from the Navy
to the Air Force Reserve like for
you?
I had to learn the ways of the Air
Force, which was very different
culturally from the Navy, but the Air
Force treated me with tremendous
