Contemporary Rehab The Newsletter of the National Rehabilitation Association February 2011, Volume 67, No. 1 SPECIAL EDITION ON LEADERSHIP Leading With a Vision By Ashley Bryant, NARL student member American scholar Warren Gamaliel Bennis once said, “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” This quote reminds me of the process of creating art. When I begin an art project, I always envision creating something great. As I paint, I often think about what the picture will look like when it is complete. That vision becomes reality when I make the last stroke and the picture is clearly seen on the canvas. Being a student leader in the field of rehabilitation is much like creating art. The vision of better serving persons with disabilities is more visible after making small or large strokes on my professional canvas. In making strokes and creating a picture of service, I always strive to carry myself as a role model. Living in a time when federally funded programs are under new scrutiny and unemployment numbers are at an all time high in our country, the work of our LEADERS in the field of Vocational Rehabilitation is vital. As our Association’s professional leadership division, NARL is committed to the development, the improvement and the strengthening of practices and skills in both public and private rehabilitation organizations.
