enforcement and emergency response agencies. UCLA Transportation’s plan is not complete without coordination with the UCLA Police Department, UCLA Emergency Management, Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Los Angeles Fire Department, the Los Angeles Police Department and California’s Department of Transportation. The campus police, whose direction Transportation takes in the event of an evacuation or other emergent situations, have primary responsibility for public safety. This may also result in coordination with the city’s law enforcement, fire and other emergency response agencies. UCLA Emergency Management coordinates UCLA’s overall emergency response plan (http:// map.ais.ucla.edu/go/1003287). Transportation works closely with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation to modify signal timing in order to allow more traffic to exit the campus and the surrounding communities and coordinate traffic routing plans. Coordination with official on-campus emergency planning entities is also vital to maximize safety and minimize confusion. During an emergency, UCLA Transportations’ plans are coordinated with those of many other campus departments through its involvement in the campus’ Emergency Operation’s Group. Information from this group is provided to the campus’ Emergency Management Team, comprised of many campus senior administrators. Decisions from the Emergency Management Team, including whether the campus is open, its accessibility, and the resources needed to manage a given emergency all impact Transportation’s response. In addition to its key role during a campus evaluation, UCLA Transportation’s plan helps the campus by providing critical services in the aftermath of other campus emergencies, such as an earthquake. “The plan provides resources to support emergency response, logistical support and an initial assessment of conditions,” said Lisa Koerbling, associate director of Parking and Finance for the department. “Services can include assistance with structural assessments to parking facilities, campus fuel systems checks, modifying shuttle bus operations to support

emergency response, traffic management and other forms of evacuation support.” If a decision is made by the campus-wide UCLA Emergency Management Team regarding an emergency campus closure or evacuation, UCLA Transportation will work closely with UCPD, LADOT, the six public transit service providers who come to campus and other agencies to ensure public safety. For your campus, think ahead, and draw those connections between parking structures, the roadway network around the structures, and the larger, regional roadway network beyond that. Realize that even with all the planning and coordination, in the event of a campus-wide evacuation, some level of traffic congestion is unavoidable. Thus the motto of UCLA Transportation’s Emergency Response Team is “you can’t predict, but you can prepare!” 
