A Scientific Approach

Hospital Parking and Patient Flow:

Imagine you are sitting in a meeting room with clinicians and doctors. Suddenly a scatter graph is presented on the screen, and you are being told that parking is hurting patient flow throughout the hospital. The data presented show on average it takes 23 minutes from the time a ticket is issued at the parking entrance, to the time a family arrives for their clinic appointment. “This is a parking issue and you must fix the problem,” said the doctor running the meeting. Since that day, there has been a flurry of activities, attention to details and new challenges that have changed the way parking and patient flow is viewed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Background
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center wants to be the best at getting better. Our vision is to be the world leader at improving child health through research, education and outcomes. To us, outcomes include a hassle free arrival and an easy departure from the hospital. Our visitor

garage is actually three garages, all built at separate times and connected to each other. The flow is terrible; there is only one entrance lane and one exit lane, which is not suitable for 2,000 or more visitors a day. We have felt that these issues needed to be addressed and corrected, but how could we convey that to senior leadership with any kind of credibility?
