BIM Building Information Modeling 1 - (Page 12) SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION An Interview with a Local AGC Chapter on Its Nationwide BIM Training and Validation Program Launch Q. And the validation part? A. Validating your company's ability to work in the BIM environment is important. AGC recognized this important validation component several months ago and is on the verge of implementing a training and validation program that will help contractors become fully competent in BIM and help owners, architects, and others in the construction community distinguish the truly competent BIM contractors. Q. What are the components of the program? A. This educational program is designed to be delivered in much the same manner as the very successful AGC Supervisory Training Program. AGC of America, chapter leaders, and educators have been meeting for almost a year to build a solid yet dynamic curriculum for education and validation expertise. The BIM educational program will comprise six individual units, each including a number of various individual components. While these are not listed below in any particular order, each unit can stand on its own to build an entire understanding of the topic. • BIM 101: An Introduction to BIM will begin the training. A test of this module was presented at the most recent AGC of America convention, with close to 100 members in attendance. This initial orientation model is designed to give the beginner an overview of the various aspects of the BIM process. • BIM Legal Issues and Risk Management: This module will provide information and insight into all the critical aspects of business and project contractual issues that are impacted by BIM. In this new world of sharing of electronic documents, clash detection reports, and collaborative design and construction, a host of legal and risk issues come into play that have unique ramifications in tomorrow's BIM world. • BIM Technology: No course on BIM would be complete without a technology module. This module will comprise three sections including a broad understanding of the available BIM tools, hands on BIM software training, and utilization of the various tools in a seamless manner to get the various compatible software tools working together on a single project. This module will be delivered in conjunction with the various software developers and providers in the BIM marketplace. • BIM Process and Integration: Integrating the BIM process into the day-to-day operations of a construction company is yet another module. Utilization of the appropriate internal company management processes in collaboration with BIM technology will truly make BIM a success within a firm. Inability to integrate technology with company construction practices will result in wasted resources. The effective utilization of BIM principles in collaboration with all project stakeholders is the emphasis of this course. Leonard Toenjes, CAE, president AGC of St. Louis Q. What do you expect this new program will accomplish? A. Leveraging Building Information Modeling (BIM) expertise to differentiate your firm in the crowded construction marketplace is critical. In addition to the numerous technological and operational challenges of utilizing BIM, there is also a very large communication and marketing issue. As contractors move forward with becoming knowledgeable about all the various aspects of BIM and taking all the implementation steps, they must also stay focused on the return on investment. Being the best BIM contractor without the ability to deliver this service to clients is just not good business. 12 BIM
