BIM Building Information Modeling 1 - (Page 13) SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION • BIM Case Studies and Lessons Learned: This module will look at successful BIM projects and utilize the Harvard Case Studies approach to guide students through a process of confronting the decisions and dilemmas on a BIM project. Each case presented in this unit will provide concrete examples of connecting BIM to the real world of construction. • Advanced BIM: The final BIM unit in this program will include ongoing advanced studies. As with many other aspects of our industry, BIM can't just be learned once. It is certainly going to be a dynamic process for the foreseeable future. Updates on each of the topics covered in the BIM educational process will be collected and delivered on a regular basis. At the conclusion of this process, a contractor can truly demonstrate to a prospective client or owner that he/she is BIM ready. As with many other issues in marketing a construction company, such as safety, some quantifiable demonstration of expertise is important. A contractor who merely purchases and installs the latest and greatest available BIM software may think it is a BIM-ready contractor and may purport itself to be BIM-ready, but without training and education in the critical issues that compose this course, it is not. AGC will be providing the training and the validation for the industry that AGC BIM trained contractors truly are ready to provide a higher level of BIM service to the construction industry. BIM - more than just a clash detection tool Many AE's and contractors are slowly adopting BIM to some extent. But the vast majority of utilization today is clash detection as a coordination tool, and pretty picture scheduling techniques, simply displaying the construction process against a timeline. Although these are improvements in the design and construction world, they stop terribly short of the great potential which exists for BIM and collaboration. Given the current economy, and some of the technology challenges which still exist, a fear exists that the industry will not continue to push the envelope to develop and utilize new applications. The following are expanded applications of BIM, many of which exist today to some extent: • Direct material fabrication from the BIM model -- steel fabricators have made great progress here, but the rest of the trades are lacking. We need to have HVAC, electrical, fire protection, exterior skin, and architectural trades adopt direct fabrication techniques • Submittal tracking -- we are now tracking submittals in the model graphically (not submitted, submitted pending review, and approved for fabrication). It is very powerful to sit in a meeting and review with the AE and sub why the project is in jeopardy of falling behind schedule when the evidence is shown graphically. Alex Ivanikiw, AIA, senior vice president, Barton Malow Company • Quantity take-off (not estimating) -- the technology now exists that electronically performs a quantity of all materials within the project. A reluctance to adopt exists due to the “confidence” in performing take-offs manually. Can it be that human hands never make errors? • Facility-management applications -- the greatest as-built of all time is the final BIM model. Yet, few, if any, owners are asking for this at project completion. The greatest challenge is still a cultural shift by all parties -- owners, AE's, contractors, municipalities, and specialty trades. How does the industry move from the mentality of hard-copy documents for legal purposes to an electronic world in which information is transferred instantaneously from designer to fabricator to installer? Owners need to step up and insist that their AE's and contractors explore and adopt new BIM technologies. BIM 13
