BIM becomes much more than a new way for architects to draft, when our consultants offer their models for coordination. This allows us to use conflict resolution tools/processes during the design process in order to confirm the integrity of our team's design. Of course, this potential is taken even further when a construction team is selected that embraces the use of BIM tools. In addition to advocating contractors who embrace BIM tools, we are currently aligning our teams with subcontractors in order to explore best practices for how design models can be useful for fabrication. As these tools continue to develop, and adoption increases, we are seeing more design and construction professionals as well as our clients, benefit from their value first hand. Michael Bordenaro, Affiliate AIA Co-Founder, BIM Education Co-op™ BIM Breakfast Club Brewing in Chicago The buildingSMART alliance™ is the defacto “BIM Association” that is supported by McGraw-Hill and other large and small building industry leaders. The Alliance is establishing its presence in 22 BIM Chicago and around the country with interest groups, many of which are calling themselves BIM Breakfast Clubs. David Ivey, AIA, with HOK's Chicago office, was the catalyst in forming the Chicago group, which has had more than half a dozen meetings, including two special focus gatherings in the afternoon. Ivey has cited a desire to help raise awareness of the increased productivity and profitability that can be realized when advanced tools and processes are introduced to building projects. Aware of the inevitable problems encountered during industry transformation, Ivey supports the concept of sharing experiences and solutions to help raise awareness and capabilities across all professions. Peter Rumpf, Assoc. AIA, with Mortenson Construction has had a consistent presence at the meetings and has provided an overview of the high-level modeling capabilities of BIM. Mortenson Construction won an Excellence in Architecture AIA BIM Award for highlevel modeling that contributed to the beautiful Denver Art Museum. An afternoon meeting featuring James Salmon, Esq., president of Collaborative Construction Resources focused on the legal documents that can help establish a legal foundation for the new business processes enabled by powerful, advanced software. The recognition that quality is quantifiably improved when BIM software and processes are used properly lead to another afternoon meeting that was the beginning of forming an insurance collective to realize reduced insurance rates for qualified participants. A new member, David Pikey, BIM Integration Director, Hill Mechanical Corporation, recently provided a depth of insight about how his company is realizing financial benefits and improved quality in mechanical specification, fabrication and construction. According to Pikey, by staying on top of software issues and managing the challenging interfaces of evolving mechanical engineering BIM software, hardware interoperability issues and the Chicago BIM Breakfast Club member Terry Jordan, with structural engineering firm the Stanley Group, helped focus the attention of national buildingSMART alliance™ members on the Quad Cities this summer, when bike planning possibilities were demonstrated on Google Earth, a BIM tool. Architecture students from Miami Dade College landed a Bike Economic Development building in Davenport. Lucien Lagrange Architects' Director of Information Technology, Dean Mueller, AIA, has been a strong supporter of the Chicago BIM Breakfast Club. Mueller notes that in addition to understanding the perspective of fabricators, contractors, lawyers, engineers and other building industry professionals, the group is helping to raise regional awareness that BIM and related processes can be implemented by firms of all sizes. While the group is open to all professions and firms of all sizes, HOK and OWP/P have graciously hosted the events to date. Bill Cihon, RA, CAD Manager for A. Epstein and Sons International, Inc. indicates that it is beneficial to learn techniques, such as using construction management benefits and concepts of shared rewards. According to Cihon, having a group support these concepts, it is possible to see how the Chicago area building industry can provide the entire area a host of benefits from BIM and related business process improvements. For more information regarding upcoming BIM meetings contact David Ivey at HOK. david.ivey@hok.com.
