Danny Tubbs Receives Family Involvement Award
hen one or more persons in a family have a loss of hearing, everyone in the family is affected. HLAA is committed to supporting family members and helping them to understand hearing loss, to learn how to best communicate with the hard of hearing relative and cope with everyday situations. This award is designed to recognize dedicated family members and their contribution to the growth and development of HLAA. Katherine Burns, Danny’s wife, nominated her husband Danny for the award. Here is what she wrote: I nominate my husband, Danny Tubbs, for the Family Involvement Award. He is the epitome of an involved support system for me and others in the hearing loss world. I met Danny when I was 14 (and hearing) but we lost touch and didn’t meet again and get married until we were in our 40s. When we met for the second time, I was in the beginning stages of my progressive hearing loss. He has been my chief advocate ever since. Danny has always shown great patience as my hearing has gotten progressively worse. He repeats as many times as is necessary and interprets for me with no complaints. The TV is set for permanent captioning and he’ll turn off a movie if the captions or subtitles aren’t available. He realizes this is my reality and wants to share it with me. As one of the founding members of the HLAA-Los Angeles Chapter, he’s proven to be his weight in gold

(and at 6’5”, that’s a lot of gold!). He has always been personable and friendly, and when he turns his charm onto nervous, shy people attending their first meeting, they just can’t help but respond. What’s unique about him is that he is sincere. He genuinely likes people and wants them to feel good about themselves. He is a member of the steering committee of the chapter and recently took on the role of treasurer. He takes an active part at each monthly meeting, despite his claims he’s “just there for the food!” I was elected president a year ago and he has made my life so much easier by attending to the many small issues that pop up. He helps haul and set up all the technical equipment, such as the projector for the captioner, to every meeting. Danny is also a

moderator on our Yahoo listserv and maintains updates monthly. New members who join the list get help from him and he troubleshoots any problems that might arise. Every month he does outreach to every group interested in hearing loss that he can find by posting our meeting announcement. He’s constantly scouring the Internet for more groups that might be interested. He sends out notices to 20 different groups, possibly reaching thousands of hearing impaired individuals. Danny used his technical skills to set up HLAA-Los Angeles on Facebook and to set up the Northern California Walk4Hearing site. Just recently he gave a presentation for the California Leadership Workshop about membership building that can be done by employing all the social networking tools possible. As the husband of the president, he calls himself the “First Dude,” and he definitely supports me in my role but also supports all the members of our chapter and the hearing loss community at large. He is the friendly face that’s always there and will continue to be a huge asset to the Hearing Loss Association of America!
