12 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2009 2009 COMMENCEMENT Graduate For the second year the College held separate commencement exercises for its  master’s degree recipients. In this th year of awarding master’s degrees,  graduates earned master of business administration degrees,  master of science degrees were awarded and  graduates received master of art degrees. Eleven students, one in each discipline, were recognized for outstanding achievement. They were Royster Lawrence, in business administration; Lynn Cross, in biomedical science; Gary E. Corsar, in computer and information science; Edward Chwalik, in computer science; Monica Grant Kellner, in curriculum and instruction; Brooke Reinsfelder, in educational leadership; Mary Evelyn McGuigan, in human sciences; Yasmin Kronﬂi, in humanities; Antoinette Border, in mathematics education; Lauren Secrist, in reading specialization; and Valerie Whye, in thanatology. Xinlian Liu, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science and director of the computer science program, and Shari Ostrow-Scher, instructor of education, were recipients of this year’s Teaching Excellence Awards, given to one full-time graduate school faculty member and one adjunct instructor who were identiﬁed as exceptional by their students. President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., called upon each of the graduates to “maintain their high standards, for ultimately your character will be your greatest possession.” Cheryl Parrott, M.A. ’, director of communications for the National Cancer InstituteFrederick, one of the nation’s most important research facilities, delivered the commencement address. Parrott urged the graduates to never underestimate the power of giving: “What you impart to the places and the people your life touches will carry an element of your experience here. I have no doubt that it will be like Hood … and like you: bold, compassionate and generous.” Parrott received an honorary doctor of humane letters for her extraordinary achievement, commitment to excellence and unwavering dedication to the community.
