I sent cards to 27 and thank those who responded. As Betty Anderson Blair says, “We are survivors.” Despite the need for a pacemaker and an inhaler, she lives independently in her apartment; attends Women’s Club, church and senior center; and goes out to lunch. Reading is still a favorite pastime. Elizabeth Austermuhl Lehman now resides at Victoria Commons, #106, 610 Townbank Rd., North Cape May, NJ 08204. Her telephone number is (609) 884-3152. She still maintains her home in Cape May Point. Mother’s Day was special with the visit of her great-grandson and her first dip in the ocean. She looks forward to her birthday in August when her great-granddaughter will visit. Lucene Glock Graham advises to “hang in there.” She says she is not the slim gal anymore and she sent me a picture to prove it. Louise Kling Tefft and I have some things in common—macular degeneration, congestive heart failure and a love for talking books. However, she has a skill in art which I lack. A picture of one of her paintings appeared on the front of her church bulletin. Louise Nickey Hoffacker celebrated her 94th birthday on Mother’s Day with a Nickey reunion. Her nephew Robert Nickey III is a member of Hood’s board of associates. An article in a John Knox Village publication states that Dorothy Rager Miller “always looks like she just stepped out of the fashion store.” She visits Hal each day in the health center and is so pleased he recognizes her. Betty Saylor Flocken spends several weeks a year in Scotland visiting a granddaughter who has published her fifth book. She has nine great-grandchildren, the oldest of whom is serving in Iraq. Another 10-year-old is living with her. She says most of her life has been spent in childcare which she enjoys. Jane Stuart Jewett’s new address is 900 Jericho Court, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579. Ruth Swomley Lugar’s retirement home is near Hood. She attends many events there. She and other residents completed more than 37,000 hours of volunteer work in Maryland. She continues to be active despite a stroke and leg fracture. Jacqueline Tappan Cathcart moved to the White Mountains in New Hampshire six years ago to be near her daughter and she never regrets it. She still keeps her home in Maine and visits there 1931 Participation: 37.5% Total Class Dollars: $145 Please send your news directly to Tammy McElroy ’05, Associate Director of Alumni Relations, Hood College, 401 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21701-8575; (301) 696-3977 or to hoodmagcnews@hood.edu. 1936 Participation: 36.36% Total Class Dollars: $1,200 Lavenia Hargett Marsh 600 Schley Ave. Frederick, MD 21702 (301) 663-9396 Helen Brenneman Lesser says she wishes she could come up with some real interesting news. Yet I suppose we are all in the same boat. She writes, “I’m just very grateful and happy that I am capable of living alone in my home and able to drive wherever I need to go.” Esther Gray sends her greetings from her home to your home. She thinks of you and Hood as very special. Julia Schaffer Radcliff has moved into a retirement home in Wilmington since she now uses a wheelchair. Her large home where she and Bob had lived for a long time was too much for her. I talked with Eleanor Thomas Bussard’s nephew recently. He had visited her in Homewood Retirement Center and she is doing well there. Had a card from Irene Baltzer Igoe’s daughter informing me that her mother passed April 23, 2009. Our prayers and love go to her family. I went to our 73rd Hood reunion luncheon June 6. There is something about this occasion that still gives me a special excitement. There was one thing I had difficulty understanding—how young everyone looked in the 50th class. I just couldn’t believe it! Of course I should have known the answer. Dr. Volpe talked about the health of colleges in general. He mentioned that colleges, as Hood, are classified as “private” versus state universities. He mentioned that college’s like Hood should be referred to as independent colleges, not private colleges. He also said that in the 1960’s about fifty percent of all fist time college students enrolled in independent colleges. Today that percentage has fallen to nearly ten percent. The report for our beloved Hood is very healthy and the future looks bright. We can rest assured our captain will steer us through any troubled waters in the days ahead. I represented all of you and wished so much you could have been with me. The campus is beautiful. My best to all of you. 1932 Participation: 28.57% Total Class Dollars: $1,050 Please send your news directly to Tammy McElroy ’05, Associate Director of Alumni Relations, Hood College, 401 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21701-8575; (301) 696-3977 or to hoodmagcnews@hood.edu. 1933 Participation: 0% Total Class Dollars: $0 Please send your news directly to Tammy McElroy ’05, Associate Director of Alumni Relations, Hood College, 401 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21701-8575; (301) 696-3977 or to hoodmagcnews@hood.edu.
