Hood College- Navigation, Summer 2009 - 31

32 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2009 school started the succession of many more to follow. Barbara LeGore Olson wanted to cheer her sister-in-law on for her 50th reunion. They both live in Frederick. Sue Peters Wirths C ’69, M.A. ’79 came from the Homewood Retirement Community where she volunteers. She enjoys singing at her church and helping her daughter at the Smithsonian once a week. Kathy Crook Heidelbach drove up from Baltimore to be with us. She spends several months at Bethany Beach, Del., where she and her son own a house. Carole Oswald Carter and I (Ginny Turnbull Hecklinger) were sure to get her address so we can stop by to see her when we vacation down there for a week. Carole came from Harper’s Ferry, W.Va. She had visited her family in California and was home again. She is a member of the Angel Band there consisting of a group playing folk instruments. Hers is a dulcimer, an autoharp and such as fits the band. I find joy in singing in a contemporary choir at church, watching the grandchildren grow and accomplish, and taking driving trips. We were sorry not to have Mary Ann Howe Mauzy join us. She is missing Johanna Magaha Stull who died April 17, 2009, in Baltimore. They were close friends. A number of us have sent donations in her memory to Hood. I had a visit from Linda Kelly Gleysteen M.S. ’84, during which I heard about her purchase of eight ukuleles so she can teach youngsters fun songs to sing and play at her church. She claims that they learn to play three chords in an hour and are good to go. In conversation with Ann Helfenbein Bohnet, she mentioned she had attended the John’s Hopkins 55th reunion for her husband Dick. They watched Hopkins win a lacrosse game and then received a memento of a paperback lacrosse story written by Neil Duffy. I knew about it because Neil had gotten some of the story from my brother who told about our dad who was a four-time All-American and in the Hall of Fame at Hopkins. Anyway, Ann was excited about the connection. I recommend the inspiring lacrosse story for enthusiast of the game. The title is “The Spirit of the Stick.” Betsy Bigelow Abruzzo e-mailed that she has earned a life master of bridge, her latest passion. She will have five grandchildren in college. In good health she sends her best to all. Ann Barnett will travel to Iceland in July. She had a visit with Ruth Irwin Weidner at the MET in New York in June. Barb Bundens North was good enough to e-mail me again with her news. Sometimes I lose things. She says, “The Red River of the North, which flows into Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada, crested on my birthday March 28. It stayed at flood stage for six weeks. There was an earthen dyke built on my street to contain the flooding river. Two days after the crest there was a blizzard. Our city and county people were wonderful, filling four million sandbags.” Barb is an active volunteer for Hospice and at the Hector International Airport in Fargo. Look her up as you fly in! Our sympathy extends to Cinny Sternberg Schein for the loss of her husband Rick Jan. 3. We remember him at our 50th. She has been taking some time to visit family and friends. Talking together on the phone, I felt proud of her outlook. To my surprise, last week a letter from Pat Fowler Smart arrived. The family purchased a cabin in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina as a reprieve from Florida summers. Her son Gregory and his wife are Methodist ministers in Chattanooga with a 4-year-old son. The first marriage added a granddaughter and grandson, both on their own in Florida. Pat writes, “I also volunteer as a docent at the Florida Museum of Natural History. I’ve been fortunate to attend docent meetings at a lot of other museums across the country.” If you get to Baltimore look up Barbara Hanna Pour. My friend Sandy Newing in New Jersey called when Mary Lu Urban Walker and Tom were there for a visit. We had a conference call. All is well. Mary Lu and Tom had driven East from Guthrie, Okla., for family business. Good to hear their voices! Congratulations to Anne Sulin Jones on your induction to Hood’s Athletic Hall of Fame! There’s more news due in December so mark your calendars. I’ll be looking for it. Have a great summer. Participation: 34.21% Total Class Dollars: $16,055 Joanne Adickes Walker 15 Elizabeth Parkway Eatontown, NJ 07724 jawalker8@verizon.net Sarah Bulin Hanson just returned from a trip to Charleston, S.C., for her granddaughter’s graduation from college. Sarah plans to visit that lovely city again as her granddaughter will continue to live there. In September Sarah and her husband are looking forward to visiting Capon Springs and Farms. In addition to a relaxing time there they will have the opportunity to see Claire Austin Bellingham again. Several classmates have mentioned the limited handicap access to Hood buildings. Hood is gathering information about cost and feasibility of adding accessible entrances. As part of her class agent duties Sarah will be contacting all class members before the end of the fiscal year and may include more information about this issue. Linda Wood Higginbotham and husband Al live at 435 South Gulfstream Ave., Apt. 1101, Sarasota, FL 34236. Their phone number is (941) 366-9359. They would love to hear from Hoodlums. Linda and Al have eight grandchildren. The oldest two are married, one is an aspiring opera singer and the other is a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. The remaining grandchildren—the youngest of which is 10—are attending various schools. Linda writes, “Sadly, our oldest son Allen Jr., 53, passed away in February 2009 of lung cancer. He never smoked.” Margaret Reeves Leopold found fall very interesting. She volunteered a few hours for the Obama campaign and then worked at the polls on Election Day. Peg writes, “That day, people— even waiting up to 40 minutes in line—were wonderful. It was a marvelous experience and one I suspect will never be repeated.” She worked the polls in June for the Democratic primary for governor of Virginia. Despite having enjoyed her 20 years as a medical social worker Peg is now relishing the lack of pressure involved in retirement. She takes yoga classes at the Y so the “bod” will flex. Peg quotes from “Gringos in Paradise” by Barry Golson, describing retirement in Mexico and hinting at the pace she now enjoys: “I got up this morning with nothing to do and by the time I went to bed it was only half finished.” Also on Peg’s reading list was “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Of this book, Peg writes, “It has much to say about all of the events and our tasks in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is a huge undertaking, commitment and adventure by one special American.” Now that she has had both shoulders repaired Molly Smith Sperandio wonders what could be next. Knee? Hip? Back? No way! She hopes that she is done in the surgical sense for the rest of her life. Rehab on her left shoulder was completed in February and she is doing quite well. Molly writes that her life seems to be filled with volunteerism— church ministries of vocal and bell choirs, ushering, prayer readings, knitting prayer shawls and now learning the ins and outs of becoming the treasurer. “I think I lost my head when I volunteered for the latter. I’m no accountant but with my ‘QuickBooks for Dummies’ I may at least learn enough to put figures on spreadsheets and run reports.” Molly enjoys ushering at the local theater and seeing the great plays performed there. In addition, Molly is acting as a docent for a new exhibit at the Florida International Museum. Two trips Molly is looking forward to are the high school graduation of her grandson Kyle in Milwaukee, Wis., and then a road trip to Pennsylvania for the annual family reunion when she will spend one week with sister Kitty Smith Dunn ’47 in Bethlehem and other sisters in Lancaster. While there she will also have a chance to visit with Diana d’Elseaux Lowell ’59 (nursing program). Nancy Paul Stimson thought life was supposed to slow down as one got older but has found that it sure doesn’t. Her oldest granddaughter is graduating from college in Nashville, Tenn. Unfortunately Nancy cannot attend as she is busy moving to a new condo this summer with her special friend Bob. Nancy is still president of the condo association where she currently lives. In addition, she is involved with the historical society and house tours, as well as school tours to some of the old buildings. For relaxation Nancy has been playing duplicate bridge, bringing back many memories from smoker days. Nancy sends her best to all.
