Hood College- Navigation, Summer 2009 - 35

36 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2009 just finished his freshman year at UMBC and will be living with them for the summer. Phyllis Allegretti Panico retired from a long and satisfying career in clinical research with a pharmaceutical house, then taught in the schools of medicine and public health at George Washington Univ. for 10 years. She now plays tennis and bridge, and visits her eight grandchildren. Life is good. Shirley Garrett Haley just finished a year of supervising 14 foreign language teacher interns for the Univ. of Maryland and is looking forward to a summer of long weekends in Rehoboth. Susan Kaehrle has been retired for a few years and enjoys trips to Maine, Seattle and New Orleans to visit family. She has been in touch with Ruth Chittick Leigh ’63 and spent a day in NYC with her recently. Her granddaughter, 11, has just made her Broadway debut at the Belasco Theater. Susan sends a message to Hilda Koontz: Your little sister is alive and well and living in New Jersey! Gwen Jordan Bausum and her husband are living in Clover Hill in Frederick in the same house they built 35 years ago! They have 11 grandchildren, the oldest of whom will be graduating from high school and is off to college in the fall. Teddy Matusiewski is off to visit family, starting in Alaska to visit her sister Carolyn Matusiewski Cannava ’63 then to see her niece Tara Cannava ’87 and her twins in Seattle where you can see Mt. Redoubt, which has volcanic activity. Vivi Bruckel Harvey is still working for the language school in Mexico—Cemanahuac Educational Community—and is planning a second group trip to Peru in November. This year Jeanne Duncan Jehl and her husband Joe are joining her. Vivi is going about nine days before her group goes to travel on her own in Bolivia, entering around Lake Titicaca, and flying back from La Paz. Her itinerary is on her Web page. Check it out at www.vivianharvey.com. I (Suzanne Brown Wellcome) am still working full-time through August and will then take a breather as we, too, travel to South America in the fall. I may run into Vivi and Jeanne in Machu Picchu! I am back and forth to our cabin in Montana in the summer and my husband stays there with the dogs. Thanks to all of you for keeping in touch. It has been fun but it’s time for me to bow out and let someone else have a go at it. If you are interested—and it is fun—contact Tammy McElroy ’05, associate director of alumni relations, at mcelroy@hood.edu. E401 State College, PA 16803-1881 (814) 237-5858 LMorrow@psu.edu Janice McDavid Kuntz, Debby Warner McPhail, Betty Reynolds Leebel, Norma Fike Trax, Margaret Jones, Laura Geiger Wenger, Anne Schepler and their men have enjoyed two mini reunions with picnics, brunches, restaurant hopping, sing-a-longs, sightseeing and reminiscing about Hood. It was almost like being back in their block of rooms in Smith. In the past two years Janice and Dick have traveled to Hawaii, Colorado, Italy and Norway, as well as East Coast destinations for family visits, Dick’s 45th Naval Academy reunion and regattas. Janice sings with the Washington Women’s Chorus. Janet McDougall sees Don and Betsy George Ohnegian at the Lincoln (as in Abe Lincoln) Group of New York occasionally. She enjoys retirement in NYC. Debbie Patterson Clark served on her county superior court grand jury. She found it interesting to hear testimony and vote for probable cause. Judi Simonsen Ziobro and Ed split their time between northern Virginia and their new place near the Chesapeake Bay. They are learning how to tell the difference between an oyster and a clam. They met with Judy Jensen Burgess, Judy Bailey Allison and Betty Wright M.A. ’90 just before Betty had knee replacement surgery, which was later reported to be a great success. Liz Decker Rogers and Bill celebrated the births of two granddaughters last year. Anaya Rogers and her parents live near them in California but Maya Lizzie and her parents are in NYC. Bobbi Arthur Pretzsch is in Biloxi, Miss., helping with two little grandchildren. She works part-time for Cici’s Pizza Buffet and is still able to help with dog transports along the I-10 corridor through Mississippi. In her spare time she crochets for various charities. Gail Wood Fortin, Marvia Slade Perreault, Linda Martin McManus and Bobbi had a winter vacation in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Pam Roberts Welham wrote that Walt, USNA ’62, turned 70 in March and they celebrated by attending three practice rounds Call for nominations Trustees: Alumnae and alumni may submit nominations for trustee positions at any time. These nominations should be directed to the Trusteeship and Governance Committee of the Board of Trustees. Nominations for trustees may be submitted using the following link: www.hood.edu/nominations. Awards: Nominations are now being accepted for the Excellence in Alumnae and Alumni Service Award; the Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Award; and the Outstanding Recent Alumna or Alumnus Award. The awards will be presented at the Alumnnae and Alumni Luncheon Saturday, June 5, 2010. For a nomination form, go to www.hood. edu/awards or contact the Office of Alumnae and Alumni Relations at alumoffice@hood. edu or (800) 707-5280, option 2. of The Masters golf tournament. When everyone asked “How did you get tickets?,” the answer was: “Easy—go online and just spend $$$. Trickier is finding a place to stay.” Walt’s Class of ’62 is linked with the Class of 2012, current plebes at USNA. Thus, they have been invited to many events which remind them of college days. Pam notes how young the midshipmen all look while we look just the same! Joan Terpak Plitt reported that John had his aortic heart valve replaced in December and hernia surgery in March, so she thinks all his parts are fixed! He recovered very well and was a “surprisingly” good patient. They hope to meet Phoebe Adams Marshall and Al for lunch in June on their trip to Myrtle Beach. They frequently travel between York (home) and Myrtle Beach to visit their son. They are still antique dealers—Joan collects antique dolls, children’s tea sets and antique Christmas items. Lillian Detrick Blood wrote that Cindy Klopp Butler ’63 was in New York for her 45th reunion from Cornell Nursing School. Over dinner they reminisced about Hood and pleasant memories of blooming wisteria. Lillian and Dave skied with their grandchildren last winter. They now have 11, and travel either 5 hours by car to Vermont or 5 hours by air to California to visit those precious ones. Sally Zimmerman e-mailed: “After three years of traveling to Chicago for intensive courses twice a year, I received a doctoral degree in ministry in May. My project title, ‘Using Drama to Enliven Worship,’ was dedicated to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa, Fla., where I am the settled minister, because the congregation assisted in my experiments with improvisation and other dramatic modes to ‘enliven worship.’ I’m done with school now. At Hood I would have voted myself ‘least likely to go to graduate school’ but something happened in the meantime and I have earned two masters and now a doctorate. Now I need to focus on learning how to use a computer more efficiently. And maybe learn Italian.” Jody Merritt Watson recently returned from a month in coastal North Carolina escaping the Maine mud season. On the way they visited with Beth Davis Pauley who has had great sadness in her life with the loss of Ted last year and her mother this year. Jody and Peter live in Portland, Maine, which allows them to care for their son’s two children on Mondays. Their daughter and husband, also in Portland, are expecting in August and hoping they’ll want to do the same for them. Jody wrote, “Aren’t we too old for this?” Jane Hoskins Bollman, Judy Hammond Blatchford, Susan Shinnick Hossfeld, Susan Rugemer Kurtz, Nancy Turner Heckscher, Anne Pursell Hammond, Penny Misirian Mardoian and assorted spouses met at Longwood Gardens in April and had a wonderful tour led by Nancy, followed by a great dinner at her house. Judy hosted a nice breakfast for most of the group the next day. They found it hard to believe 50 years has passed since they first met in the fall of 1958. Susan Rugemer Kurtz wrote that she stays busy with her
