44 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2009 Frederick area counseling individuals and couples. She reports that both of their daughters are making their way in the world. Liz practices law in Richmond, Va., and Annie is a social worker in Baltimore. She and husband Lenny are expecting to be grandparents soon. Leslie Hawkins had one of those great Hood connection encounters before the holidays. She was traveling in Egypt with her mother and two sisters in November and on their first day getting settled into the hotel in Cairo one of the people in the tour group came up to her, took her hand and said, “You went to Hood.” In the moment Leslie was actually astounded. It turns out that Helen Calhoun Grier ’54 was one of the 18 people in their group and she had spotted Leslie’s ring. Leslie says it was enjoyable comparing notes (Helen had grown up in Maryland; she and her husband now live in Dallas). The rest of the group, which came from all over the U.S. and abroad, was amused that they had this special connection. Jill Schonek Pollard is working in a new job which she says is the perfect fit. She is the director of the Goddard School in Alpharetta, Ga., north of Atlanta. Son Morgan is working as a chef and son Griff is in the national guard and is currently deployed in Afghanistan for the second time. Husband TJ is selling steel processing and playing golf. Jill says she would love to hear from Hood alums in the Atlanta area. Sherry Bronski Waltz has welcomed her third grandchild. Samantha Mae Menkes was born in December in NYC. Sherry has been traveling extensively this year. Two trips to Poughkeepsie and Las Vegas to celebrate husband Bob’s 60th birthday; as well as Cancun; Naples, Fla.; NYC, to baby-sit for the new granddaughter; Cambridge, Md.; and Ocean City, Md. In addition to doing a lot of baby-sitting (Sherry’s other two grandchildren are nearby), she is still working. Her spare time is filled with bridge, book club, yoga and golf. Charlie Miller Ponticelli is keeping busy. The first week of June she was off to Istanbul where she was invited to speak on a panel for an International Women’s Entrepreneurship and Leadership Conference. She also helped to organize a major symposium on Afghanistan in D.C. June 30. She volunteers when she can at My Sister’s Place, which serves meals to homeless women in Baltimore. On Feb. 27, Charlie returned to Hood for a student event, participating as a panelist for “Strong Women of Today and Tomorrow.” She was also guest lecturer in Dr. Latkovski’s global studies class in March. Charlie says that Dr. Latkovski is still one of the best of the best. Lorraine Sharp Kish, Donna Simmons Maneely and Karen Bast Griffith made a visit to Frederick and the Hood campus on Feb. 27. Following lunch at Dutch’s Daughter they attended “Strong Women of Today and Tomorrow.” They also toured the history museum in the library— very interesting to see all the vintage Hood memorabilia. Marcia Coyle DiBiagio H ’08 said her son is home from college, confirmed by the fact that his laundry basket keeps filling up and her car requires gas at least twice a week. They are enjoying a full house again. When he is home his buddies are there, too; and with their daughter and her friends it’s a lot of fun and chaos. Marcia is in the middle of her busiest work time of year—the end of the Supreme Court term—and she is getting ready for Senate confirmation hearings for Sonia Sotomayor this summer. Look for her during the hearings on PBS’ “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.” She’ll be with the show as it does gavel-to-gavel coverage of Sotomayor’s testimony. In October Marcia’s husband is making good on a 25-year-old promise to take her to Paris. In spite of the fact that she has done a lot of traveling abroad she has never made it to Paris. Given all that is on her plate Marcia is looking forward to her trip. I (Anntoinette “Toni” Dobil Lucia) have been keeping busy as well. Earlier this year the second edition of “The Art and Science of 360 Degree” feedback was published by Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer. The first edition came out in 1997 and my co-author and I were delighted that the publisher was interested in an update. While it is not the sort of book that would get a talk show host’s attention, it has come to be recognized as a valuable resource for organizations implementing feedback systems and processes. I continue to enjoy my work as a management consultant and am especially happy that my husband Al and I are managing our business together. Son Ben is working as an attorney in D.C. and son Jesse is working as an underwriter in Scottsdale, Ariz. On the home front Al and I recently completed the renovation of a 1920s house within walking distance of town. We love it and are thrilled that the project is over. We have definitely learned that renovation will not become one of our hobbies in retirement! Participation: 21.76% Total Class Dollars: $13,218 Sally Johnson Leland 420 C Ave. Coronado, CA 92118 (619) 435-3052 sallyleland@sbcglobal.net Greetings from Southern California! Distance prevents me (Sally Johnson Leland) from getting back to Maryland, and Hood in particular, with any frequency. My desire to be your class correspondent is driven more by my wish to feel a sense of connectedness. So, if you will, connect with me and ultimately those within our class. We think of each other, we reflect on our experiences at Hood but how often do we pick up the phone to call? Thirty-five years ago on May 18th, we crossed the divide. With diploma in hand we had a greater understanding of ourselves and our capabilities to forge our own paths and create our own destinies. Hood prepared us well. I am reminded frequently of Hood’s many gifts. One being Marcia Coyle DiBiagio ’73, H ’08, Washington Bureau Chief at the National Law Journal/Jim Lehrer News Hour, who I frequently catch recanting the nation’s legal issues of the day. She’s every bit as thoughtful in her delivery as I remember at Hood. If we could just get a caption under her name that reads “Hood Graduate” (much like optimists do if their name/photo is intended for print matter) think of the advertising Hood could get! Doug and I enjoyed having Kris Zarfos ’75 spend a night with us when she was in San Diego attending the scientific sessions for the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project treatment trials in early May. Kris is the director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, Conn., and has been and continues to be a prominent beacon of hope and understanding for those with breast and colon cancer. If you haven’t had a screening yet, heed the Nike mantra—just do it! She, along with husband Bill Vasiliou and son Michael, live in Deep River, Conn. Bill has worked for the housing authority in Connecticut for 30 plus years and enjoys the proximity of the river to get out on his boat. Michael just wrapped up his freshman year at Colby in Waterville, Maine. For those of us who have lived in New England (Maine in particular), we know just how competitive and revered Colby is. Maine could benefit from the brilliance of today’s youth, however, most tend to leave the state for shores and borders beyond. Condolences extended from ’74 to Kris and her family on the recent loss of her mom in April. I called Robin Leech to find out what has transpired in her life in the last 35 years. She has been happily ensconced in her teaching career at the Concord Hill School in Chevy Chase, Md., for all those years as a third-grade teacher and more recently as a pre-K teacher. Dibby Burnham is living in Clinton, Conn., and works at the public library in Old Saybrook, where she recently received a welcome promotion. Dibby also cares for children whose parents are in need of a “date night,” “date week,” or those traveling on business. Dibby’s son Jared married last summer and is living in Henderson, Nev., and is completing a master’s degree in business. Dibby’s daughter Sara is living in Oregon. With an associate degree under her belt she has found full-time work with benefits and is financially independent. She plans to work toward her bachelor’s degree as time allows. Diane Sugden Shepherd and husband Bill are living in Lorton, Va., where they have been since ’92. Bill retired from the Navy in ’96 and is currently with Oracle. Diane is the deputy director of labor and employee relations with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. They have two daughters, Alison and Katie, a sales rep with AstraZeneca and an ensign, USN (Citadel) heading to Corpus Christi for flight training, respectively. Diane and Bill headed to the USNA May 25th for the wedding of Abigail Philips, USNA ’09—daughter of roommate Ann Thomas Philips. Barb Burt Sherland and Pete are in Mercer Island, Wash.
