W W W.HOOD.EDU 9 Spring 2009 Visit www.hoodathletics.com for the latest Blazers news! 17 Athletes Inducted Into Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society The Hood College athletic department welcomed 17 inductees into the inaugural class of Chi Alpha Sigma, the nation’s first scholar-athlete honor society, in a ceremony at the Marx Center May 3. Six juniors and 11 seniors were among the honorees who represented the first Hood College class to earn this prestigious honor. Inductees must maintain at least a 3.4 cumulative grade point average as a junior or senior and have earned a varsity letter in their sport. Haynes Breaks Records at CAC Meet Senior Matt Haynes (above) closed his Hood career in style at the Capital Athletic Conference championships hosted by St. Mary’s College (Md.). Not only did Haynes advance to two consolation finals and one championship final, he also bested three freestyle school records in the process. Haynes left his mark in the record books in the  free, the  free and the  free. Haynes will also leave Hood with five relay records; three were set during his freshman year and two during his sophomore season. Willison is Seventh Blazer to Net 1,000 Points in Program History Junior Jen Willison (above) scored her ,th career point, becoming the seventh women’s basketball player in program history to reach this elusive plateau. She reached this milestone in her th game in the blue and gray, making her the second-quickest woman to accomplish the feat. Melissa Kelly ‘ reached , career points in  games, while Rita Willis ‘ scored her ,th career point in her th game as well. Willison used a pair of free throws with : remaining in the second half to eclipse the ,-point barrier. Juniors • Stephanie Gardner, a three-year letterwinner on the softball team and elementary/special education major • Adam Gilbert, a three-year member of the men’s soccer team and computer science major • Laura Hines, a three-year member of the women’s soccer team and mathematics major • Tim Kuhn, a three-year runner on the cross country team and communication arts major • Jessica Stanley, a two-sport athlete in cross country and track and field, all-CAC second team honors and social work major • Thomas Williams, a letterwinner on the swim team and management major Seniors • Ben Caplins, a two-sport athlete in cross country and track and field and chemistry major • Caitlin Erickson, a four-year member of the women’s tennis team and social work major • Jamie Gardner, a two-sport athlete on the volleyball and softball teams and an elementary and special education major • Ashley Garyn, a four-year member of the swim team and communication arts major • Kelly Keyser, a two-sport athlete in cross country and track and field and history major • Tomilayo Komolafe, a two-sport athlete in cross country and track and field and mathematics major • Jess Krietz, a three-year letterwinner on the softball team and mathematics major • Jen Lacy, a letterwinner for field hockey and softball and an elementary and special education major • Michelle Leggieri, a letterwinner on the swim team and social work major • Danielle Sgro, a four-year letterwinner on the cross country and track and field teams, three-time allCAC performer and political science major • Katie Thomas, a three-sport athlete in track, cross country and equestrian and a biochemistry major Athletic Department Honors 41 Seniors at Annual Banquet The athletic department paid tribute to its  graduating seniors from its  varsity teams and one club team Sunday, May . Twelve outstanding senior student-athletes were presented with departmental honors in seven categories. Coach’s Awards: Katherine Law (softball) and Jeff Willison (basketball) Dean’s Awards: Jamie Gardner (volleyball/ softball) and Matt Haynes (swimming/ track and field) Kim Servedio Award: Crystal Parker (field hockey) President’s Awards: Ashley Garyn (swimming) and Tomilayo Komolafe (cross country/track and field) Scholar-Athlete Award: Danielle Sgro (cross country/track and field) Trustees’ Awards: Liz Rakowski (soccer) and Garrett Loomer (tennis) Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Awards: Jessica Parrish (soccer/basketball/ track and field) and Tim Abercrombie (basketball) Women’s Softball Makes History With 6-1 Win Over Wesley Starter Bridgette Ringley struck out  batters while Sara Wastler and Krista Zerby drove in two runs apiece in a - victory for the fourth-seeded Hood softball team over fi fth-seeded Wesley College April  in the fi rst round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The victory marked Hood’s fi rst-ever CAC tournament win in softball. Wastler drove in two runs and stole a pair of bases while Zerby was -for- with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Ringley picked up her fi fth pitching victory and matched her careerhigh with  strikeouts while allowing just six base hits.
