12 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2008 Graduating seniors Steve Delaney, Stephanie Garrett and Lindsey Nagy. 345 Diplomas Awarded to Largest Graduating Class in College History Bachelor’s degrees were awarded to the largest graduating undergraduate class in more than  years during a picture-perfect morning May . Graduating seniors, parents, friends, faculty and guests ﬁ lled the ,-seat tent on the residential quadrangle, and nearly  additional guests witnessed the  a.m. commencement ceremony from the surrounding lawn. The  women and  men hailed from six countries,  states and the District of Columbia, eighteen of whom studied in foreign countries. Sixty-two were adult students and  students began their studies at other colleges before transferring to Hood. The graduating seniors included more than  legacy students who, like one or more of their family members, joined the ranks of those who have earned a Hood degree. Emily Monroe Carey, a psychology major, and Vanya Mihova Slavchevska, an economics major, were awarded The Hood College Academic Achievement Prize for the best academic records in the Class of . President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., urged the graduates to retain the education, the values and the friends they found at Hood and to “let the lessons you learned here, inside and outside the classroom, guide you in your future plans.” He prevailed upon the graduates to “do good work … and do it the ‘Hood’ way.” Commencement speaker and alumna Marcia Coyle ’, the Washington bureau chief and U.S. Supreme Court correspondent for the National Law Journal, spoke about “pursuing a passion that deﬁ nes (your) lives, that gives meaning each day.” She was awarded an honorary degree for her dedication to excellence in journalism and devotion to judicial reporting. Eileen Dickey, president of Hodson Services LLC, which provides accounting, auditing and administrative services to The Hodson Trust and The Hodson Scholarship Foundation, was also awarded an honorary degree for her ongoing allegiance to her community and for her eﬀorts in support of the College, its mission and its faculty, staﬀ and students. Since , numerous Hood students have been able to further their education through the generosity of The Hodson Trust and the Hodson Scholarship Foundation. Hood, one of four Maryland colleges that are beneﬁciaries of the Trust and the Foundation, has received more than  million to support student scholarships, professor endowments, athletic programs, research grants and internships, and to build and upgrade campus infrastructure. Eileen Dickey of the Hodson Trust, LLC and commencement speaker and alumna Marcia Coyle ‘73 received honorary doctoral degrees at the undergraduate ceremony. Frederick surgeon and graduate school alumnus Dr. Manuel Casiano MBA ‘03 gave the graduate school commencement address and received an honorary doctorate.
