14 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2008 Where are they going by Adrienne Gonzales Many of this year’s exceptional graduates will continue to blossom and go on to make their mark in a variety of inspiring and intriguing ways, either by continuing their education, securing noteworthy appointments or positions with prominent corporations or traveling the world. To say that Class of  graduate Freddie Ephraim will be flying high after graduation would not be an exaggeration. In addition to fi nishing his degree requirements—graduating with honors— in less than four years, the political science major studied for and earned a good number of other certifications and qualifications that will serve him in his chosen career of aviation. While a student at Hood, Freddie earned his private, multi-engine, instrument, instructor, and helicopter pilot ratings, logging some , hours of fl ight time, and is currently pursuing his commercial pilot rating and a career in the airline industry. When the Jamie Bussey DeMatha (Md.) Catholic High School graduate wasn’t flying, the Eagle Scout volunteered as a fi refighter in Frederick; interned in Washington, D.C., for the Subcommittee on Government Efficiency, Financial Management and Intergovernmental Relations; as a staff member with the Inspector General for the Corporation for National and Community Service; and as a clerk for the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. No less focused was classmate Jamie Bussey, an English and communication arts major and four-year starter on Hood’s volleyball team and a member of the softball team for three years. The Newburg, Md., native’s passion for journalism and athletics extended beyond the classroom and into the work world. Outside of classes, Jamie served as editor of the campus newspaper, the Blue & Grey Today, for three years, as a reporter at the Frederick News-Post, as an intern at National Geographic in Washington, D.C., and as a workstudy student for Hood’s marketing and communications office and the sports information director. She was awarded a Laughlin scholarship for all four years at Hood; won the Alyce T. Weinberg Scholarship Prize, the th Robert and Ruth Delaplaine Scholarship, the R George Randall Award for Excellence in G Journalism and The Blue and Grey Editorial Jo Award; was a Society of Professional Journalists Maryland State Chapter scholarship recipient; and was named a Christine P. Tischer Scholar for her senior year departmental honors paper, “Evolution of Newspaper Technology and Its Impact on the Niche.” So, one would think that she would be destined for a job in journalism or sports. One would be wrong. Jamie has joined the Peace Corps and will be traveling this fall to her assignment in Africa. To get an idea of why graduate student Claire Hudson has a passion for the well-being of the planet, just thumb through her passport. Claire’s exotic travels have nearly spanned the globe since birth. Born in the Channel Islands off the French coast of Normandy, she grew up in Dubai and went on to earn her undergraduate degree in marine science from Victoria University in New Zealand. Claire then chose to pursue her master’s degree in environmental biology at Hood and was recognized this year as an exemplary student in the program with the outstanding student award by program director Drew Ferrier, Ph.D., professor of biology. As a full-time graduate student, Claire, who graduated in May, conducted the first field studies regarding the damaging effects of ultraviolet light on the DNA of tropical sea anemones. The
