Hood Magazine Summer 2008 - (Page 17) W W W.HOOD.EDU 15 Freddie Ephraim Bermuda Institute for Ocean Sciences recognized Claire’s contributions to the field with the Samuel Riker Fellowship. She continued her research on field-collected anemones there and will be presenting her findings at the th International Coral Reef Symposium this summer in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Claire has begun work as a lab manager and scientific diver for the University of Maryland’s oyster recovery project and has also founded a nonprofit organization to advance marine conservation, education and research. Just as Claire’s passion for the environment has been her guide to numerous destinations, fellow graduate student Bruce Weinberg’s zest for learning has taken the phrase “ jack of all trades” to a new stratosphere. After double majoring in psychology and economics at the University of Pennsylvania, Bruce owned a ceramics company, Thrown With Care Ceramics in Great Neck, N.Y., for two years. He then went on to pursue his law degree at Fordham University and is currently licensed to practice law in three jurisdictions. Bruce enrolled in Hood’s thanatology graduate program last summer and completed his degree in one year. Thanatology program director Dana Cable, Ph.D., professor of psy- chology and thanatology, presented Bruce with the department’s outstanding student award at May’s graduate school commencement reception. An eclectic lifelong learner, Bruce will attend Pepperdine University on a merit scholarship to pursue a second master’s degree in marriage and family therapy with aspirations of becoming a grief therapist. An intrinsically altruistic person, Bruce has served on more than nonprofit boards and is chairman and director of medical education for the VHL Family Alliance in Brookline, Mass., dedicated to working with those suffering from a rare genetic illness called Von Hippel-Lindau. In his spare time, he facilitates groups for newly diagnosed HIV patients, makes meals for the homebound and records academic textbooks for the blind. He is also a judge emeritus for U.S. Figure Skating and an avid cyclist. Hood’s campus is well known for trademarks like the pergola, the columns in front of Alumnae Hall and the lush green quad. But if one were to stroll around Hood’s campus at any point during the past four years, it would have been tough not to notice Shane McCarrick’s infectious smile. His unselfish humility combined with his ambitious resolve gave Shane countless reasons to boast that signature grin. The résumé of this Myersville, Md., native is noteworthy in its long and diverse record of achievements. A member of four honor societies, Shane graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics and a minor in mathematics. A presidential scholar at Hood, he garnered numerous accolades for his outstanding academic prowess, including the Maryland Association of College Directors of Athletics Postgraduate Scholarship and a selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic AllAmerica Third Team. In addition to his consistently demanding course load, Shane completed a -month departmental honors thesis on “National Security’s Domestic Surveillance of American Citizens.” Also a gifted athlete and leader by example, Shane was a founding member of the Blazer men’s soccer team. A four-year starter and team co-captain for Hood, he was instrumental in transforming a squad that earned just one victory in its inaugural season in to a contender in the prestigious Capital Athletic Conference. Shane has been accepted into the highly competitive George Mason University Law School this fall. Next page: See where more of Hood’s undergraduates and graduates are going next. http://WWW.HOOD.EDU
