Our condolences to the families of Mary DeChant Grant who died Jan. 1, 2008; Margaret Dutrow Ramsburg who died March 24, 2008, in Frederick; and Mary Billman Hershey who died May 13, 2008. 1934 It’s always interesting and rewarding to hear from my classmates and to share our activities and interests. Harriet Roberts Edwards reports she is doing well. She has family nearby her apartment. She enjoys reading and trying to keep up with the times. She has no complaints and enjoys each day. Helen Brenneman Lesser is busy with family and friends. In August she’s planning to go with her son and his family to Mackinac Island to reminisce when she and Bill were there; then home via Lancaster, Pa., Maryland and Black Fields, N.C. Trips of remembrance are always the best. Esther Gray lives across from a lake and each day, weather permitting, walks around it (not all the way). She’s in good health. She’s always happy for Hood contact and reading about the “new Hood.” Eleanor Marietta Dries says she reads everything she receives about Hood and enjoys it so much. Margaret Seyfried Peters reports good health and is content being an “old lady.” She still plays cards and enjoys visiting friends and talking to her neighbors. Eleanor Thomas Bussard is in good health and enjoys being in Homewood at Cumberland Farms. As for me, I was proud to attend Hood’s graduation since our youngest granddaughter Molly Marsh ’08 received her degree in psychology. The Class of 2008 was the largest in the history of our beloved alma mater. I’m sorry to report the passing of three of our classmates. Rhea Robinson Claggett on Feb. 6, 2008, Ruth Darby Dean on May 25, 2007; and Beatrice Bomberger Posey on Jan. 1, 2008. Our prayers and thoughts are with their families. Pa., for Christmas. Sympathy is extended to the family of Isabel Crum Kefauver, who died Dec. 10, 2007. Lukie Kling Tefft feels so lucky to have so many young friends with whom she plays bridge, dines out and travels. Abstract painting and cookie baking are still her hobbies. Elizabeth Moseley Hope recently recovered a letter she had received from Jane Grafe Swett in 1935. It was a treat to reread it. Dottie Rager Miller and Hal are confined to their home at John Knox Village because of Hal’s condition—Alzheimer’s disease. She misses singing in her church choir, which she had done for 30 years. Lucille Thomas Hall had back surgery last May and now uses a cane. However, she is back to traveling—to Florida, the West Coast, Sicily, Germany and England. I enjoy hearing from so many of you. I was delighted to be able to attend a gathering of Hood alums in February on Hilton Head Island. Of course, I was the oldest present, so the treated me special. It was good to hear of Hood’s progress from Tammy Butler, director of major gifts, and Dennis McKinney, associate director of annual giving, at Hood. The proposed new recreation center sounds very exciting. Our condolences to the families of Marie Lesher who died July 18, 2006; Mary Basehore who died May 5, 2008, in Carlisle, Pa.; and Marian Gates who died Feb. 22, 2008, in Arlington, Va. 1938 Phoebe Land Matz 1010 Waltham St., Apt. H389 Lexington, MA 02421 Our condolences to the families of Lillian Neola Brown Shaff who died Jan. 14, 2008, in Washington, D.C.; and Bernice Benjamin Dattelbaum who died Feb. 5, 2008, in Salisbury, Md. We also send our sincere condolences to the families of Elizabeth Leiby Gilbert, Helen Martz Cotner and Trudy Spoerl Hoyt, all of whom died in 2007. Trudy was living in an assisted living home for several years and died of pneumonia Sept. 24 soon after her 90th birthday. Jane Harley Gilmore is living through a severe drought and has strict water restrictions. The pool was closed and she says she finds it hard to do without appliances such as her disposal. I hope that does not include her bathroom and dishwasher. She still plays golf on a par three, nine hole golf course. Her family came to Carolina to celebrate her 90th birthday and later two of them returned to play golf there. Jane has a weak muscle in her heart which has slowed her down a bit. She rests for about five minutes when she gets tired, then goes on again. She even naps in the afternoon. She thinks she does about 60 percent of what she used to do. That is amazing. She spent a wonderful week recently in Branson, Mo., Please send your news directly to Tammy McElroy ’05, Associate Director of Alumni Relations, Hood College, 401 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21701-8575; (301) 696-3977 or to hoodmagcnews@hood.edu.
