Hood Magazine Summer 2008 - (Page 30) HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2008 June took a cruise off the Maine coast. It was a wonderful surprise to have a letter from Maryanne Muehlhof Morton, now living in Carlisle, Pa. Ander and Dick’s son Rick bought Ann Landauer Spence’s ’47 husband’s optometry business when he retired. The husband of my best friend in Woodstock was a classmate of Ander’s in high school. They saw each other at their 50th reunion. Small world for sure, Ander. Louise Renninger Rittenhouse writes that her second granddaughter, Alexandra, attends Goucher and is spending her junior year in Siena as an art history major. Tootie and daughter Beth Rittenhouse ’74 planned to visit Alexandra in April. Tootie had lunch with her little sister, Betty LePatourel Powell ’50, in Bryn Mawr. Tootie says the round robin letter is still circulating though there are only five of them now. The group is on its 140th round. Sunny Ruby Martino reports that their group has restarted their round robin. Nan helped her sister move last summer into a retirement home. She is cleaning out their family home which her sister left so it can be sold. In the midst of all this, Nan fell and tore her hamstring. However, all is well now. Polly Smith Moyer underwent open-heart surgery in May 2007. Following discharge she wore a LiftVest 24 hours a day for six weeks. She returned to Hershey Medical Center for a pacemaker implant. In October she had to return to the hospital for further complications. Three sessions a week for six weeks at the cardiovascular rehab has renewed her strength and energy. The whole family was together for Thanksgiving, the kids doing the cooking. Polly and Clay’s five grandchildren range in age from 15-20. Their two oldest are in their second year of college—Amherst and Penn State. Our good wishes to you Polly for a better 2008. Midge Blakeney Filmyer and Bill spent several days in Maine with M.T. Weissbach OberholtzerSmith and Dick. The Smiths hope to accompany Midge and Bill to Quebec sometime this year. Has anyone said we were retired? I think not! Your letters are so interesting an ’tis hard not to write your news verbatim. Our condolences to the families of Jean Leader Eisenhart who died Jan. 1, 2008, in Hanover, Pa.; and Dorothy Peel Scoggins who died Dec. 19, 2007. Our sympathy also to Joy Silvis Keasey whose husband Lester died June 7, 1999. Katharine Couper Watrous, who sent a Christmas letter with details about the tragic death of her grandson Charlie and the death of her beautiful four-legged companion Brigie last fall, died March 20, 2008, in Binghamton, N.Y. Toms River, NJ.; and Gertrude LaMura Steinhauser who died Aug. 10, 2007. Elizabeth Derr recently had hand surgery and is doing well. Albertine Hodgson Baker had a trip to Florida this winter. Her children treated her to an 80th birthday party. Helen Kamp VanHassel became great-grandmother with the arrival of her first great-grandbaby May 24, 2007. Helen works with three auxilaries—a hospital, a retirement center and a retreat for children with developmental disabilities. She also plays with a handbell choir. Lois Keller Rhoderick says she is thankful for her age and good health. She gets on campus very often and is amazed at the changes. Susan Sprague Davis and I had a delightful phone conversation. She and Bill live in a retirement center in Chevy Chase, Md. She talks regularly with Margaret Hukill Prince in Wilmington, Del., and with Mary Elizabeth Hazlett Scott in Buckeystown, Md. Pat Swearingen Nicodemus had a great-granddaughter born in December 2007. Grandmother is Ann Nicodemus Thompson ’77. Jean Righter Bolle 2552 E. Alameda Ave., Unit 7 Denver, CO 80209-3324 (303) 777-7617 at least partially, she continues to provide consultation services part-time for two Friends schools, as well as being active in a Questers chapter, church activities, a book club and bridge. She and a cousin took a Great Circle cruise from Amsterdam to Vienna— sounded like a wonderful trip. She is also in touch by phone with Barbara Neumann Trethaway in Florida. Jane Sundelof Jones remains a volunteer at Hillwood Museum and Gardens in D.C.—and urges all of us to visit there. Her 16 years at the National Institutes of Health were followed by a career as personnel officer at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. While there, she met Jane Klemer ’51. As for the Bolles, all is well here. Last January we hosted a reception for Denver area alums to meet with Nancy Gillece ’81 and Linda Hoffman from the College. We were delighted to have 35 alums (including a few spouses and one son) attend. The oldest was a delightful 95-year-old from the class of ’31, and the youngest a graduate of the class of 2007, plus there was at least one person representing every decade in between. It was a wonderful afternoon for us all. I still see Elizabeth Geiser ’47 when she is in Denver (her half-time home now). Meanwhile, Ed and I keep busy with friends, bridge, church, etc., and visits to see our three granddaughters (8, 4 and 2) in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Pauline Toms Flanagan 108 North 2nd St. Woodsboro, MD 21798-8306 (301) 845-8683 Our condolences to the families of Mary Susan Neal who died Feb. 23, 2008; Barbara Sutphen Krehely who died Feb. 12, 2008, in Our condolences to the family of Jeanne Blum Douglass who died March 2008. There may have been fewer classmates responding to my call for news, but what interesting letters they sent! It is such a pleasure to hear from all of you—many thanks to those who answered my request. Barbara Jacobs Rowland is a very busy woman. In addition to her church activities, she chairs a program for the League of Women Voters, enabling dialog between town officials and their citizens. Of their six grandchildren, one graduated from Tufts last spring, a second graduated from high school and will enter Tufts in September, and the third is a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon. Barbara and husband Bob enjoyed a wonderful Baltic cruise with their son David, and were delighted with the Hermitage, the Russian ballet and trips to various ports of call. Joanne Jarrett Sullivan and her husband enjoyed their usual winter in Florida, and visited with family and friends there. Their oldest granddaughter graduated from Mary Washington College, where another granddaughter is a sophomore. Last April their youngest son and his wife had a baby boy, so now Joanne has two grandsons and six granddaughters! Patty Karl Sheeliegh is still busy as an art appraiser, and is very active in her Episcopal church. She had a wonderful time with former roommate Fay Ann Aldrin Potter, who was visiting from California. They walked the beach in New Jersey and reminisced about old times. Patty enjoys being with her children, grandchildren and the company of her “gallant gentleman, Charles.” “Retirement” is a term that doesn’t seem to fit Barbara Smith Rell. Though officially retired, Betsy McCain McAlpine 7207 Warbler Lane McLean, VA 22101 (703) 893-3893 Thanks to Betty Engle Kennedy for sending an April 2008 news clipping about the Hidden Valley golf course, carved out of a Schuylkill County (Pa.) dairy farm owned by Pat Knobloch Jones’ husband’s family. Hidden Valley opened in May 1958 and, 50 years later, a case could be made for the Jones family being to golf what another Schuylkill County family—the Yuenglings—is to beer. It’s a long article and Pat is quoted through all of it. A note from Jane McIntosh Seel’s earlier letter: “Miss Osborne’s English class was my favorite. She was an intimidating but inspiring teacher. I wish I had written in later years to thank her.” Jane Klemer has always been interested in articles about Dr. Margaret Rawson who was her mentor. I’m sure many of you have similar thoughts about former faculty. Christmas card update from Viv Steven Varvis about children of daughter Alita and Esme. Taylor graduated and now works as a certified mechanic. Nyssa is a senior in high school and is the family “jock.” Apollo is a proud grade “over” and Ulysses is still at home. Husband Chris (retired doctor) does some consulting and Viv is still playing golf. Joann Schlesinger Clark writes, “Since my triple bypass in June 1985 I seem to have been given a whole new life and am trying to make the best of each day. In February 2006 I took my four daughters and one daughter-in-law to Innsbruck to thank them for their care during
