Hood Magazine Summer 2008 - (Page 33) W W W.HOOD.EDU a tremendous success. Many thanks to Sally Kuhns Giarrantana for making all the arrangements—it is truly appreciated. The following are notes from those classmates in attendance: Buffie McKim Powell stayed in Shriner—the security was unbelievable. The campus looked great and the weekend too short. According to President Volpe, the dorms we lived in are no longer acceptable to the present generation. They want suites with private bathrooms! It was a weekend she “will never forget.” Pat Lloyd Fordham says it was “fantastic to see my classmates again. Sad there weren’t more. I’ve enjoyed it tremendously and will keep coming back as long as I possibly can.” Barbara Menges Sjaastad writes, “The long trip was certainly worthwhile. Reconnecting with friends of my youthful days at Hood has become more important as the years go by. The weekend met all of my hopes and expectations.” Nancy Eaton Thompson says, “How wonderful to pick up where we left off five years ago! I wished for more to attend but we hope to do better next time. I have every intention of coming back as long as the ‘ole bod’ will allow.” Lynn Phillips writes, “The richness of so many years meeting together and sharing a weekend is very precious. Hood was our bond, reunions reinforce us and the love between us prevails. Please come and share our next one with those who carry on for those who passed on.” Penny Fradd Vahsen writes, “Fifty-five years disappeared as we ‘remembered.’ The campus is gorgeous! Please make the 60th.” Shirley Prescott Schwartz said, “I am overjoyed to have accompanied Addie Parkes Mott to this reunion. The day was wonderful.” Sue Heubisch Milkey said, “Whoever was not there, you missed a great, fun time. It seems like only yesterday that we had all been in Coblentz. Plan for our 60th.” Betty Gerstmyer Allen writes, “I arrived at 3:30 p.m. Saturday after youngest grandson Greg graduated from the Univ. of Delaware. It was a wonderful day! So good to see all the familiar faces.” Sally Kuhns Giarratana writes, “Everybody looked wonderful! So glad everyone came.” As for me, Jo Chait Essex, it was wonderful coming back and seeing everyone. Please try to make the 60th. Sally has been nice enough to say she will chair it and already has a restaurant in mind for our Saturday night dinner. Dorris Smith Radcliffe 1117 Wilton Creek Road Hartfield, VA 23071-3035 (804) 776-7116 dsrcanis@cablefirst.net Our condolences to the family of Rena Sheehan Bostwick who died Nov. 25, 2007, in West Palm Beach, Fla. Our sympathy also to Margaret Elizabeth Reid McCune whose husband John died May 9, 2007, in Bethesda, Md. Jean Baker Leister is waiting for the opening of Oakview Manor. She plans to move there for her retirement. In the mean- time she is enjoying being near sons Andy and Dan. Jean’s mantra is “Everyday is a joy to be.” Jean McCarty Bowen and husband are well and happy, still in their home of 40 years. They are celebrating 50 years of marriage in 2008. Jean participates in a number of groups and enjoys grandchildren living nearby. Her hobby is photography and is off to an Elderhostel in South Dakota. She often thinks of her experiences and the people at Hood. Marilyn Ogden Heath recently spent a delightful evening with Jane Hinckle Stockdale and husband. The Stockdales are snowbirds on Marco Island and the Heaths live between Marco Island and Naples, Fla. Marilyn sings in the church choir and her husband runs the PowerPoint presentations. They enjoy their boat and the many waterfront dining spots. Marilyn continues to teach and judge dressage throughout the country. She also teaches judging. Sallie Pennebaker Chesnut is home a lot due to diabetes problems and Bob is in bed most of the day. She manages to volunteer at church and the library. She recently accompanied daughter Debbie to son John’s 50th birthday party and son Jeff’s family to grandson Aaron’s baptism. Joyce Pritchard Furst retired in 2000 from the law firm after 30 years as head librarian. They travel frequently to Baltimore, to see daughter Mary Catherine and family. Mary Catherine is fighting brain cancer with the help of physicians at Johns Hopkins. Daughter Debbie works in design for Ferguson Plumbing and lives in Hickory, N.C. Joyce grew up with Nancy McCormack King and they talk about once a week. Joyce, know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family! Betty Remsberg DeColigny and husband Warren love travel. Since 1996 they have covered more than 100,000 miles, sometimes on their own, lately with granddaughters. Particular favorites are lighthouses, national parks and monuments, state capitals and presidential libraries. Betty had the pleasure of visiting Big Sister Mary Gray Schofield Davis ’52 in Sarasota, Fla. She is also active in church and helps Warren with his organizational duties. Betty’s mother died in August 2007 at 101 years, active up to the end. She and Warren are celebrating a special anniversary in Hawaii in May. Pat Sabin Sprague is living in Colorado, about 100 miles from son Ted and her grandson. She commutes to New York six times a year to do some writing. In Colorado the writing is for free. She does a newsletter for the local homeless aid group. She heads to Oregon each summer to enjoy the awesome sea coast and mountains. Nolah Sawyer Fulk took time to say she is just coming out of hibernation—not a winter person. Travel plans include a bus trip to Mackinac Island, Mich., for a long weekend at the Grand Hotel during the Lilac Festival in June. Lois White Lowry officially retired from 35 years of teaching in August 2007. She was honored for her contributions to the education of nurses by receiving professor emerita status and being inducted as a Fellow into the Academy of Nursing Education. Retirement has not ended the challenges of writing for publication, consulting with schools or nursing and teaching some select courses. It takes a while to transition out of the work mode. More delightful hours are available, however, to visit and play with the 12 grandchildren in Florida and North Carolina. Husband Bob keeps active serving Presbyterian churches as an interim pastor in the eastern Tennessee region where they live. The Radcliffes are still going strong. We are busy keeping up with children and grandchildren. The oldest grandchild graduated from Virginia Tech this year and the youngest finished first grade. We try to make activities when possible. Rip and I enjoyed a trip to Normandy, France, in the spring. I am still a docent with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, work with church, Rotary, manual labor in the yard and assorted other projects. Thanks to all who answered the plea for news. I really enjoy hearing from each and everyone. Wish more would send a few words now and then! Nancy Lee Sharon Stone serves on the board of trustees as the Methodist Home for Children in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and on eight committees, two of which she chairs. Prior to retiring, she was a public relations director for a local department store. She has put her English and art background from Hood to good use. There are four wonderful sons and four daughters-in-law, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Grandson Marcus Stone just graduated from North Carolina State in Raleigh and has been signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears. She feels blessed with an awesome family for their nationally recognized achievements, current positions, quality of their lives and service to others. Penny Hapgood Noepel has a new address. She can be reached at 5 Morgan Manor, Apt. 4, Lenox, MA 01240. Barbara Heaps Rudolph 121 W.
