HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2008 our 50th. It will be Wayne’s first visit to Hood. Sara Lea Callaway Redmon and husband Carl moved the first week in December.Downsizing was a real chore 3 garage sales, many trips to Goodwill and calling “Junk-Be-Gone” helped get the move accomplished. Dawn Baehr Freedman spent most of the month of March in New Zealand and Australia, touring and enjoying these beautiful countries and interesting people. Diana Hagenbarth Russo and husband Fred attended our 50th. They have their first great granddaughter, Kenidy Lee. In October they will be going on an Elderhostel to China. Jeb Bennett Moran sent word that it was announced at Reunion Weekend that the class voted overwhelmingly to purchase the clock tower for Hood with the proceeds from our Golden Reunion Fund. Many liked the idea of reaching out over time (50 years and many generations) to collaborate with the new alumnae and alumni, the Class of 2008. Any money in our special fund that is not needed for the clock tower will be directed toward a student scholarship or prize from our class. Bunnie Potter Richardson and husband Brian are looking forward to a family get together in August at the New Jersey shore to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Robin Jamison Turner raveled north from Florida for our 50th and will also visit her mother who is in assisted living in Virginia, and will be close to her children and their families during the summer. Ricky Merrick Vosti keeps busy with their 12 children and many volunteer activities. She and husband Ken came to our reunion. Jo Olmstead Witherington’s latest news is that she is a great grandmother again … her 2nd great-grandson. In January she was on the route of the Mayan in Central America and has just arrived back from a Danube River trip from the Black Sea to Austria and then on to Prague. For those who didn’t make it back for Reunion, I hope to take many pictures and put them on a CD. If this idea works out, I’ll be happy to send a copy to any of you who wish to have a “mini-reunion.” Anne Wilson Heuisler 6102 Buckingham Manor Drive Baltimore, MD 21210 (410) 377-5026 aheuisler@comcast.net Our condolences to Karen Schiff Miller whose husband Richard died April 1, 2006. Jane Atmore Brown enjoyed her winter in Florida and a cruise to the Panama Canal. She plans to spend the summer in N.J. Lorraine Ball Chase and Steve cruised the Caribbean in December and then spent Christmas with their daughter’s family in St. Louis. Later, in Philadelphia, Lori’s neuro-oncologist discovered a new malignant brain tumor, prescribing radiosurgery. After the treatment, the Chases were able to spend the rest of the winter in Florida. Returning north for spring and summer, they heard the good news that the radiosurgery had been successful. Lori still has the original tumor, for which she continues chemotherapy. Nancy Curran Crowley called Lori in Sarasota, and they had a good talk about family and trips and dealing with cancer. Lori highly recommends “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch, which she says is a guide for her life. Catherine Brooke Buckingham and Ronnie live in Jacksonville, Fla., surrounded by family, including their son Bill and his family and Cathy’s brother Frank and his wife Judy Berry Brooke ’56. The Buckinghams’ daughter Dabney spent 10 years with Mercy Ships and is now home. Cathy volunteers at her church and has visited a companion diocese in Cuba. Eleanor Brown Wheeler volunteers at the local library and enjoys the meetings of her Memoirs Club. Every day starts with her morning dog playgroup, where the dogs romp while their owners walk and talk. The Wheelers enjoyed an annual mini-vacation with their son and daughter and their families at Pacific Beach, Wash. Eleanor is working on a family history. She asks if there are any distant cousins out there who connect with the Levering, Loughridge, Hatton, Wild, Eisenbrandt or Kehn families of Maryland or Pennsylvania. Eleanor called Frieda Cronhardt and learned that she volunteers at her church office and also falls into the nonews-is-good-news category. Betsy Chinn Rossi planned to gather with Elaine Price Flint, Pat Meredith Sinclair, Joan Kirkpatrick, Kathy Stirling Dow, Marilyn Chicklo Fletcher and Shirley Calhoun DeWitt, and their spouses in Sturbridge, Mass., in June. Tarun Comegys Johns went to Florida in early April, visiting relatives and Martha Shortiss Allen. She got a clean bill of health from her doctor there. Back home in Maine, Tarun is looking forward to summer on the water, especially a week-long Windjammer cruise with grandson Cameron in July. Tarun reminds everyone to mark calendars for June 5-7, 2009, our 50th reunion. Nancy Curran Crowley reports that her health is just fine now. The Crowleys traveled to Europe to cruise the Rhine and the Danube. Nancy Fletcher Artlett is leaving Sydney in early August, traveling to Hungary to see one of her families, on to Virginia to see two other families and Sally Fletcher Murray ’60, then to Florida to see her mother, and on to California to celebrate Nancy and Fritz Huntsinger’s 50th wedding anniversary. Fletch will be back in Sydney in September to celebrate Frank’s 87th birthday. Mary Ann Guild Simmons writes that after a six-month illness she was diagnosed with stage-three aggressive lymphoma. Bill has devoted himself to her daily care while she undergoes 18 weeks of treatments. Her children, garden club and church group shower her with attention, so she feels there is much to be grateful for at the end of each day. Gayle Hamilton Blakeslee and Natalie enjoyed a brief visit in April with Natalie’s younger son in Wyoming and also with Gayle’s daughter in California. Later they explored Croatia, Slove- nia and Hungary with Elderhostel. When home, Gayle says she is “de-nesting,” transferring slides to CDs and hoping to tackle LPs and photographs next. She has found her grandparents’ letters from 100 years ago and is enjoying poring over them. Sandy Hanson Hargrave is recovering from a stroke, being cared for by her husband Lou. She is getting therapy for her speech and mobility and is showing marked improvement. Janet Hobbs Cotton has been elected to Hood’s board of trustees. She looks forward to working with President Ron Volpe; Martha Church, current Board president; and all of the other trustees. One of Janet’s private goals is to boost the College’s national name recognition, beginning in the growing Southwest. The Cottons continue to live in Phoenix and part-time in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Two daughters live in the San Francisco area, and son John is in nearby Scottsdale. Five grandchildren range in age from 3 to 23. Janet is a docent at the Phoenix Art Museum and also volunteers with the Phoenix Youth Symphony. Edee Howard Hogan and John are enjoying their new home on the Potomac with a lovely view and no cares. Edee’s latest project is a two-month (April and May) diet segment appearing each Monday in the Life section of www.USATODAY.com/news/health/weightloss. Go online and see Edee give diet hints! Marcia King Wilke and Norm were expecting the grandchildren for Walla Walla’s Hot Air Balloon Stampede on Mother’s Day weekend. Marcia visited Bev Heckart and recommends her “boarding house” highly. Betsy Kuntz Held enjoys visiting both sons and their families in warm climes, Ray in Mexico and Tom in southern California. The Helds have a new addition to the family: Jake, a mixed breed dog. Carol Lumb Allen continues to do pro bono legal work, contributing to the Florida Web pages, “How to Get a Restraining Order” and “Custody Info,” for a nonprofit Internet organization at www.womenslaw.org. The e-mail feedback from visitors to the site is that many are helped. Barbara Lynch Guise welcomed a new granddaughter, Sarah Guise Sprinkle, in May 2007, joining son Ted’s daughter Rachel. Barb had a hip replacement in October and recovery was slow. Her neurologist says Parkinson’s is always “messed up” by surgery, and she can attest to that. Barb shares a house with her daughter Martha making life a bit easier. Judy Moreland Granger and Bob drove almost 3,500 miles from Austin, Texas, to Key West and back in February and March, visiting friends and relatives, including Ethel Kintigh Spence ’62. A special treat was meeting Gail Mulliken Painter for breakfast near West Palm Beach, where she also was visiting relatives. The Grangers are settled into retirement and are enjoying living in Georgetown, Texas. Judy loves having time for reading, bridge and babysitting for their two youngest grandchildren. Gail Mulliken Painter enjoyed meeting Judy and Bob Granger while in Florida. Gail spent a month in Europe at Christmas with her daughter Cheryl and family, who are
