She says now she will have the baseball season to help her endure the rest of the presidential campaign. Rachel Ravey Johnson teaches sciences at the Medical Technical College in Roanoke, Va. She serves on the board of an environmental group and worries about the impact of millions of human beings on a small planet that also needs to support trees, wildlife, water, clean air and a vast variety of other fellow inhabitants. Rachel loves the water and water sports and living in the country. She says her husband is a minister despite her “rather Pagan leanings.” Dale Russell Rains says that for years she was known for her expertise in teaching high school mathematics, computer mathematics and the use of the graphing calculator. From her first-grade granddaughter during a “Grandfriends Day,” she learned that she is now known for her cookies, her lemonade and her garden. “All things are important!” Myra Silberstein Goldgeier and Sheldon enjoyed a terrific trip to California, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. In May they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Easton with friends and family. Their son Jim’s new book, “America Between the Wars from 11/9 to 9/11,” has received terrific reviews from Henry Kissinger and Richard Holbrooke, among others. Sonya Solosko Baum was seriously injured in an accident in early December. While walking in a cross-walk, she was hit and dragged by a vehicle. Suffering multiple broken bones, she was taken to a convalescent hospital in Santa Monica. Sonya says she is now doing well and is almost back to normal. Her plans for starting her own business are on hold, but she has begun doing curriculum revision at home for a company for which she may do some teaching. Mary-Lou Trout Haddad and Charles are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Charles has been named Citizen of the Year for the Boyertown, Pa., area, in recognition of his civic service. Joan Victor Boos and John are excited that their son and family are moving back to Durham, N.C., from Uganda. Their daughter and her family welcomed baby Annabelle Grace on Dec. 17. John is still teaching at Ohio Wesleyan Univ. with no real plans for retiring. Joan volunteers at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop and at the local library. Pat Wever Knoll writes that their 15-year-old granddaughter Erin has sung the National Anthem four times at the Los Angeles Staple Center for pro basketball and hockey (Kings and Clippers) and will sing next year for the Lakers. Son Chris is building custom homes in Charlottesville, while Michael Damien is studying toward a doctorate in clinical psychology at The George Washington Univ. Please make a memo to send me your news next fall and also photos for a reunion DVD compilation by Jan. 1, 2009. Sally Jo Bruch Sherrill 727 Genesee St. Annapolis, MD 21401 (410) 263-5158 No news this issue. Suzanne Brown Wellcome 321 Stafford Ave. Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA 92007 (760) 753-8026 swellcome@cox.net Brenda Sheaffer Hillard tells us her husband Ray retired in 2000 and they traveled for 5 years doing monthly and longer trips … 9 weeks to Australia and New Zealand. In 2005 they moved back home to Lancaster, Pa. They are preparing for the next 20 and have a flat 1/2-acre lot with lots of flower beds a house with a bedroom on the first floor, very few steps, doors wide enough for wheel chairs, room for children to come and stay or nurse. They are now near both daughters, one of whom had a recent opportunity to vote for Ann Corderman Helton. Brenda’s mother, Helen Shaffer Sheaffer, graduated from Hood in 1935 and is also nearby. Our condolences to Margie Teague Turner, whose mother passed away March 30 at the wonderful age of 96 with Margie at her side after only a month of illness. She had lived with Margie since 1993 after Margie’s husband passed away. Margie has three kids and seven grandkids all who are doing well. Her two sons live in the D.C. area and her daughter is nearby. Janet Spaulding Nunn writes that she and her husband were in California visiting daughter Nell and husband in San Diego and then on to Berkeley to babysit with their granddaughter. Their daughter in Frederick is planning a June wedding and they gain a grandson and granddaughter in the bargain. Fran McCauley Flinn is director of a preschool in Lancaster where she was the director 38 years ago. She sings with the AARP Chorus, reads, helps out where needed and just enjoys life. She has lived in Lancaster for the past 41 years and loves the pace of life and the interesting people and activities. Carole Gorchoff Paul’s daughter Pamela has a new book “Parenting, Inc.,” which was released in March. Its had a lot of buzz (all the way to Lynchburg of all places). Pam’s making her rounds of talk shows (this morning on NBC), TV, lots of NPR, etc. It’s always exciting! Another “blast from the past” news. Sunny Griffin ’62 and Carol reconnected through a mutual friend who divides her time between NYC and Telluride, where Sunny lives. Sunny sent me some photos of the two of them from the dark ages (strange looking creatures) and they had a few yucks. Carol is still editor-in-chief of a trade publication featuring the best in retail advertising and she does freelance writing on the side. Traveled recently to Buenos Aires and Rio, also to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. She does lots of the usual things people live in NYC for—theater, museums, restaurants. Best of all, she has three grandchildren under three living in the city. Here’s a tidbit for anyone who lives in or near Colorado. Every year, for 20 years now, there’s a fabulous film festival, The Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival in Colorado Springs in early November (Google-able). Every year Carol and 10 or so of her friends go. It’s three days of outstanding films. Lynne Linzey Barnes and Jay have been spending the winters in Florida since Jay retired. She had lunch with Nancy Ford van derWalde, Mary Jane Hahn and Lyn Adams Sprinkle while there. They had a great visit and talked nonstop! They all now have silver (not gray!) hair except for M.J. who swears hers is not tinted! Everyone loves retirement! It’s a wonderful time of life. Lyn just returned from Peru and had fantastic photos to show. Nancy is “expecting” a new grandchild and her son and wife are returning to the states soon. Anne Bierstein Grenfell lives in Westminster, teaching home-bound children part-time at Carroll County Home and Hospital Center. Her “significant other,” Dr. Michael Brown, teaches biology and microbiology at McDaniel College here, and they enjoy ballroom dancing together every week. Ann is also training to be a Hospice volunteer. She greatly misses her father, who died in August, after celebrated his 100th birthday in fine style in June. A highlight of each week is being in “grandmaville” with her three grandchildren, ages 13, 10 and 20 months. She attended the semi-annual reunion at Rehoboth, Del. in March along with Sue Meeks Freeman, Carol Handwerk Zeigler, Ann Friant Scheck, Mary Anne Fleetwood, Lou Huebl Moran, Jan Dobbs Pedersen and Mary Drewal Regan. They always have a wonderful time bonding and sharing creative writing, readings and experiences. All other ’61ers are welcome to join them for these fun weekends. Nancy Brown Braudrick has a daughter living in New Zealand with her husband and two children—a world away. Her son lives in Oregon at least in the same state as Nancy who is in Gold Beach. Unfortunately, Nancy and her husband are dealing with his Alzheimer’s, and we wish them the best. Anita Ranoldo Catron, living in Salt Lake City, writes she has traveled extensively to Mexico and Brazil with an annual trip to New York
