Hood Magazine Summer 2008 - (Page 39) W W W.HOOD.EDU insights into the world of music and pianos, as well as business and politics, in late 19th century New York City. What did slow me down was some surgery on my foot …, I find that devoting two months to the healing process is very tedious. Still I did get about some, and on one excursion when family was visiting with their children, I almost rolled into Judi Simonsen Ziobro at the Washington National Zoo–I rented a wheelchair for getting around–unexpected encounters are certainly great fun!” Lynne Roach Roach lives in a golf and lakefront community an hour east of Atlanta, near her 2 children and 8 grandchildren including one set of triplets and a set of twins! In the last 5 years Lynne has done a lot of traveling including hiking in England and Italy. She kayaks to stay active. This sad news comes from Regina Schlank Pyle: “My husband of almost 45 years died on July 18, 2007, after a spirited fight against pancreatic cancer. This has been a very sad time for me and everyone who loved and admired Tom. But he had 15 wonderful months in which to live in the present; and he ran, traveled, reconnected and thought of and initiated … new projects which live on. I’ve been in the process of healing, surrounded and supported by wonderful family and friends, including my very good pal, Liz Decker Rogers and her husband Bill.” Dorothy Snyder Engle 204 Linden Blvd. Middletown, MD 21769 (301) 371-5170 dengle3699@aol.com Jo Ann Twilley Plichta 43 Consett Place Frederick, MD 21703 (301) 360-9623 Our condolences to Jan Mason Poole whose husband Gerald died June 19, 2000; and to Marilyn Monson Baldi whose husband Aldo died June 2, 2003. There must be some mistake. They say it was our 45th Reunion. How could that be? But I guess it was and we all had a wonderful time catching up on everyone’s family. The weekend started at Dottie Snyder Engle and Ron’s home where everyone had plenty of time to visit while waiting and waiting for the dinner to finish baking. Cindy Klopp Butler called from Ottawa and talked to several at the dinner to wish everyone a great reunion. She and Keith have just downsized to a place close to their old home and they were traveling with their children and their families, so she couldn’t fit us in, but next time! The weather was just perfect. Fortunately it was not the following week, as several large limbs from the tree closest to the deck were brought down onto the edge of the deck by a severe storm but causing no damage. Other than news of more grandchildren, parents who need more care, moving and downsizing, there was not much reportable news. Carolyn Maxwell had been on the East Coast helping a friend who had eye surgery. Jo Ann Twilley Plichta and Helen Buss Mitchell were unable to attend because of family obligations. Mary Ann Holloway Ford is so enjoying her counseling job with the Maryland prison system in Hagerstown that she chose to attend a convention for social workers who deal with the prison population. She said it was the first time the state had paid for a work-related trip for her, so we understand. We applaud Sue Colton Gibbons who is still working with children in Philadelphia in an after-school program that provides them with the “extras” that the school system has eliminated in order to try to raise test scores. Those extras include music and art. Those attending all or part of the reunion were: Sue Oster Robinson and Dave, Jo Cissel Doyle and Jim, Bobbi Sterner Kemmerling and friend Carroll, Ellie Meyer Pandorf and daughter Caroline Pandorf ’05, Sally Schaeffer Morse and Al, Gail Kloeblen Spertzel, Lin Chait Solomon, Kathy Van Tine Harford, Ann Enzian Robbins, Nancy Maguire Densmore, Amie Godman Tannenbaum and Don, Gretchen Howe Russo and Fran, Bobby Campbell Rickman M.A. ’75 and Charlie, Kathie Anderson Houchens and Dave, Babs Cole and friend Chris, Brenda Eklund Pearson and freshman boyfriend Mac, Sue Olpp Remsberg and all from their same original “block,” Mary-Verdella Wagner Nelson and Paul, Mary Deibler Spohn and Dave, Nancy Craven Jacobus and Roy, Dinny Ingrey Allen and Bob, Helen Pinckney Schafer and Bill, and Dottie Hussennetter Huff Ritz and Bob. Many thanks to Bobby Campbell Rickman and Sally Schaeffer Morse for the fantastic job they did in organizing our reunion. Kudos, girls! Brenda Eklund Pearson was visiting me for about 10 days, so she had a chance to “taste” my everyday life. She got to see the hellacious storm but we finished the visit with a trip to the Baltimore Inner Harbor where we viewed the Body Worlds display at the Maryland Science Center. It is a marvelous display of real bodies that have been “plasticized” or had fluids removed and been infused with plastic. If a display comes near you, don’t miss it! Brenda has been doing a lot of traveling with a group called Friendship Force. Ron and I will be joining 22 friends on an Alpine tour this summer. We wish you all good health and happy trails. By the way, those of you I never write about, we miss hearing from you. We really would like to hear from you, so don’t be shy. And if I have misspelled your name or given you a different husband, I apologize. Barbara Maly Fish 1006 Urban Ave. Durham, NC 27701 (919) 688-9125 barb2fish@yahoo.com Our condolences to the family of Jeene Neel DeVane who died Nov. 3, 2007. Our sympathy also to Patricia Finan Tibbetts whose husband Robert died May 17, 2007, in Elm Grove, Wis.; and to Harriet Stephens Whitesel whose mother Mary Helen died March 29, 2008, in Quincy, Pa. I extend the sympathy of the class to Flo Sechler Miller whose mother Alma Sechler died December 31, 2007 at age 91. We also send condolences to Kate Watson MacVean whose husband Gordon died March 16, 2008. We send best wishes to classmates announcing the births of grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. Sandy Borrelli Ricci’s granddaughter Julianna was born March 14 and Marta Schneebeli Johnson’s grandson Luc Cornet was born May 8. Special good wishes go to Darrel and Bonnie Armstrong Lilly, who celebrated the recent births of two great-granddaughters, Tara and Madison. Claire Fulenwider will relocate soon to the Portland, Ore., area, where she will take a new position as head of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, an organization funded by the Northwest utilities, serving Oregon, Washington, Montana and Idaho. Claire and partner Harriet have been in Santa Fe for a long time, so this move will involve a big change. Gene and Susie Gamble Feinour spend eight months of the year in Vero Beach, Fla. and the four summer months in Pennsylvania. She fills her days with a little golf, a lot of bridge and jewelrymaking. The Feinours have two grandchildren living in Atlanta, Riley, 9, and Anders, 7. Susie says that Vero Beach has a theater and an art museum and attracts some wonderful speakers, which mixes some culture in with the fun. After her divorce in 1977, Melinda Carlisle became a real estate broker and has been “happily overwhelmed” with the 24/7 nature of the business for more than 30 years. She sold her company a few years ago, but still works fulltime. She and her gentleman friend enjoy golf, sailing, cooking, entertaining and walking on the lovely stretches of Mystic, Conn. beaches with their dog. Nancy Peck Landt recently retired from formal business obligations and now freelances in insurance for the senior market. After earning her MBA at age 40, she worked with Control Data in their data processing division until her parents’ problems made her aware of long term care issues. She began her second career with General Electric in their long term care insurance division and retired as their regional sales manager for Georgia. Nancy still lives in Atlanta, with a second home in Bridgehampton on Long Island. She says she keeps Delta afloat by chasing two grandbabies in D.C. and another two in New Jersey. Fred and Alyce Burn Sheaffer live in Harrisonburg, Va., near their daughter and her family, which includes the Sheaffers’ two grandsons. On April 1, 2007, Alyce and Fred were blessed with their first granddaughter, Malia Sheaffer, who lives “too far away” in San Jose, Calif. Alyce and Fred extend their welcome mat to members of the class who are traveling near them in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Paula Cook retired two years ago and is a volunteer tutor http://WWW.HOOD.EDU
