Hood Magazine Summer 2008 - (Page 4) 2 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2008 Message from the President THE TRANSFORMATION CONTINUES The - academic year was, in many ways, a breakthrough year for Hood College. We reached or surpassed many milestones including, but not limited to, another record enrollment this past fall, followed in May by graduating the largest class in our treasured history. Last spring we secured a -year institutional reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and praise from our auditors and fi nancial partners for completing another financially sound fiscal year. And our friends, donors, alumnae and alumni and foundations provided the College with exceptional and generous philanthropic support. To be sure, these are reasons to celebrate. However, as in past years, it was our students, past and present, who continue to shine and reaffi rm Hood’s special committment to producing graduates who are transforming lives throughout the region, the nation and the world. In reviewing the stories in this edition of Hood Magazine, whether on Commencement or Reunion Weekend, you’ll find a common theme among Hood graduates imagining and, indeed, working to make the world a better place. They do it as teachers, counselors, doctors, dentists, lawyers, economists, executives, writers, broadcasters, scientists, researchers, psychologists, social workers, sociologists, artists, musicians, translators, legislators, historians, homemakers, archaeologists and more. Since its founding more than years ago, each semester Hood repeats an extraordinary cycle of teaching, learning and discovery—all aimed at fulfi lling its mission of educating its graduates for lives of responsibility, leadership and service. From searching for sources of pollution, to unlocking the mysteries of bacteria, to bringing more “green” to our communities, to teaching inner-city children how to read and write, Hood continues to instill in its students the confidence in their abilities to achieve that which they can imagine. While change continues to take place on campus—enrollment growth, program development, faculty and staff appointments, facilities upgrades and more—the Hood we are building for the future will rest upon the foundation of legends—Joseph Henry Apple, Andrew G. Truxal, Randle Elliott and Martha E. Church. And while the people, programs and plans may change, our special commitment to producing individuals who help transform the lives of others lives on. Warmest regards, “ each semester Hood repeats an extraordinary cycle of teaching, learning and discovery ” President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D.
