The Faculty Development Committee recommended, and the College has awarded, Summer Research Institute grants, which are partially funded by a grant from the Invitrogen Foundation, to the following faculty members and students for the work cited: Kevin Bennett, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry, in collaboration with Rebecca Hunter ’ and Mara Levine ’; “Separation of Chiral Analytes by Capillary Electrophoresis.” Susan Ensel, Ph.D., Whitaker professor of chemistry, in collaboration with Nicholina Haldane-Lutterodt ’ and Travis Kauff man ’; “Design and Synthesis of Inhibitors for Botulinum Neurotoxins.” Genevieve Gessert, Ph.D., assistant professor of art, in collaboration with Arkady Daniel ’, Aviva Lutwak ’ and Hong Yoong ’; “Excavation and Conservation of the Domus del Tempio Rotondo.” Ricky Hirschhorn, Ph.D., professor of biology, in collaboration with Erin McClure ’ and Mariam Nejati ’; “Characterization of a Cell Culture Model System of Huntington’s Disease.” Dana Lawrence, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, in collaboration with Bryan Hahn ’ and Megan Lamm ’; “Purification and Spectroscopic Analysis of Myxoma Virus Leukemia Associated Protein.” Xinlian Liu, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science, in collaboration with Brandon Burger ’ and Kristopher Reese ’; “Simulations of Coordinated Robot Activities in a Dynamic World.” Oney Smith, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, in collaboration with Colin Reitman ’; “Investigations of Soybean Plants Infected with Two Strains of Soybean Dwarf Virus.” Christopher Stromberg, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, in collaboration with Elizabeth Rakowski ’ and Casey Kohnhorst ’; “Time-Resolved Spectroscopy of Iron-Iron Hydrogenase Model Compounds.” Stephen Wilson, Ph.D., assistant professor of religion and philosophy, in collaboration with William Lane ’; “Dictionary of Early American Philosophers.” The Board of Associates McCardell Professional Development Grants Committee, working in conjunction with the Faculty Development Committee, awarded the following grants for  for the work cited: Donna Bertazzoni, professor of journalism, and Janis Judson, Ph.D., associate professor of political science; “Censorship in the Age of YouTube.” Didier Course, Ph.D., professor of French; “The Other Sun King: A Study in FrancoAlaouit Diplomacy.” Karen Hoff man, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy; “Dictionary of Early American Philosophers: Bland, Carter, Dawson and Rawle.” Scott Pincikowski, Ph.D., associate professor of German; “From Disobedience to Terrorism: Protest Movements in German Society.” Jennifer Ross, Ph.D., associate professor of art; “The  Summer Field Season at Çadir Höyük, Turkey.” Griselda Zuffi, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish; “Critical Perspectives on Life Stories of Political Prisoners (-).” Frederick County Public Schools’ 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year Kathy Tobery Three Alumnae, Student Named Best Teachers Three Hood alumnae and a student who teach in local school systems have been named outstanding teachers this year. Shanna M. Byrd M.A. ’07 is Washington County (Md.) Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year; Nancy Thorpe Kelley ’82, M.A. ’85 is Frederick County Public Schools’ 2008 Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher; Kristin MacNeill Jones ‘88 was Henrico County (Va.) Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year; and Kathy Tobery was named the Frederick County Public Schools’ 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year. Byrd, who is a second grade teacher at Funkstown School for Early Childhood Education, earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Hood in 2007. Kelley, who was one of 19 teachers from Maryland and Virginia selected for the award, teaches kindergarten at Middletown Primary School. Kelley earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education in 1982 and a master’s degree in special education in 1985 from Hood. MacNeill Jones, who is a kindergarten teacher at Ratcliffe Elementary School in Richmond, earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education at Hood in 1988. Tobery, an art teacher at Oakdale Middle School in Ijamsville, Md., is currently enrolled in Hood’s graduate certificate in ceramic arts program.
