6 HOOD MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2008 Faculty Granted Fellowships, Sabbaticals, Earn Promotions and Tenure Seven faculty members earned promotions and tenure, one earned a promotion, four were granted sabbatical leaves and two received Hodson Fellowships. The following promotions listed were granted by the board of trustees and were based on recommendations of the College’s faculty personnel committee and President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., in consultation with Provost and Dean of the Faculty Robert N. Funk, Ph.D. Ingrid Farreras, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor of psychology to associate professor; John George, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor of education to associate professor; Terry Martin, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology and thanatology, was granted tenure; Laura Moore, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor of sociology to associate professor; Lynda Sowbel, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor of social work to associate professor; Tamelyn Tucker-Worgs, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor of political science to associate professor; Kimberly Tysdal, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor of mathematics to associate professor; Stephen Wilson, Ph.D., was granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor of religion and philosophy to associate professor; Roser Caminals-Heath, Ph.D., professor of Spanish, was granted sabbatical leave for fall ; Joseph Dahms, Ph.D., Beneﬁcial associate professor of economics, was granted sabbatical leave for fall  and spring ; Drew Ferrier, Ph.D., professor of biology, was granted sabbatical leave for spring ; Craig Laufer, Ph.D., professor of biology, was granted sabbatical leave for fall  and spring ; Purnima Bhatt, Ph.D., professor of anthropology, history and interdisciplinary studies, received a Hodson Faculty Fellowship for fall  and spring ; and Rusty Monhollon, Ph.D., associate professor of history, received a Hodson Faculty Fellowship for fall  and spring . Eager Publishes Book on Women and Terrorism Paige Eager, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science, recently released a collection of 15 case studies examining women’s roles in political violence and terrorism throughout the 20th century. In “From Freedom Fighters to Terrorist: Women and Political Violence,” Eager asserts that despite women’s widespread participation in political violence and terrorism throughout history, the concept of women as active proponents and perpetrators of political violence is not widely accepted. Ernst Researches Elder Neglect A Hood professor of social work and director of the social work program has been named a Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholar. Joy Swanson Ernst, Ph.D., associate professor of social work who has been teaching at Hood since 2000, is one of the ﬁrst professors of undergraduate students to win this prestigious award. Through this program, Ernst hopes to enhance her skills as a researcher and teacher, to infuse a greater gerontology presence in the College’s curriculum, to instill a greater interest in gerontology in social work students and to communicate a higher level of awareness of the needs and concerns of older adults to social work professionals. The Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholars Program, funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City, aims to enhance the effectiveness of faculty scholars as academic leaders, role models and mentors for future generations of social work professionals working in geriatrics. Hodson Trust Board of Trustees Visit Campus Hodson Trust Board of Trustees members Robert A. Tucker, Robert C. Clark, President and Chair Finn M. W. Caspersen, Finn M. W. Caspersen Jr., Gerald L. Holm, William B. Warren and Charles W. Bower, were on campus June - for the their annual meeting. Since , the Hodson Trust has made gifts totaling more than  million to the College for student scholarships, professor endowments, athletic programs, research grants and internships, and to build and upgrade campus infrastructure.
