Hood Magazine Summer 2008 - (Page 9) W W W.HOOD.EDU 7 Cokie Roberts is Featured Author at Th ird Annual Frederick Reads Event Cokie Roberts, a nationally renowned political commentator and senior news analyst for National Public Radio, was the featured author at the third annual Frederick Reads event April . Roberts was interviewed by Nathan Sterner, a radio personality with National Public Radio affi liate WYPR/WYPF in Baltimore, in front of a packed audience in the Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall. She discussed her latest book, “Ladies of Liberty,” which focuses on the lives of some of the remarkable women who worked behind the scenes in the Cokie Roberts with Martha Church, Ph.D., L.L.D.’95, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and aftermath of the Revolutionary War. Hood has been a primary sponsor of Frederick tion in the Benefi cial-Hodson Library following her interview and book signing. Reads, a collaborative effort between Frederick County Public Libraries and local organizations interested in fostering a love of reading within the community, by bringing prominent authors to Frederick to discuss their work. In the event focused on “Manhunt: the -Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer,” historian James L. Swanson’s action-packed and true thriller about the search for John Wilkes Booth. In the event was centered on the works of author and nationally known sports writer and commentator Frank Deford. Roberts is not a newcomer to Hood’s campus. She gave the commencement address in and that year she and her mother, former Congresswoman Lindy Boggs, became the fi rst mother-daughter recipients of honorary degrees from Hood in recognition of their commitment to public service. An alumna of Wellesley College, Roberts was a student of Martha Church, Hood’s current board chair and president emerita, when Church was an assistant professor of geography at Wellesley. In her more than years in broadcasting, Roberts has won numerous awards, including two Emmys and the Edward R. Murrow Award, the highest honor in public radio. She was the fi rst broadcast journalist to win the prestigious Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for coverage of Congress. Roberts has been inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and was cited by the American Women in Radio and Television as one of the greatest women in the history of broadcasting. New Staff Appointments Three key appointments were made in the marketing and communications, student life and admissions departments recently. Chris Chilcoat, a recent graduate of Shepherd University, was named the College’s Web site manager. Chilcoat, who holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, joined the marketing and communications staff June 9. He will manage Hood’s multi-faceted and ever-growing Web presence, including day-to-day updates, programming and graphic design, as well as e-communication and interactive Web tools for recruiting, fund raising and for the campus community. The Augusta, W.V., native’s Web experience includes working on Shepherd University’s 17 Web sites as a student Web administrator and as a graphic design intern at Icon Graphics in Hagerstown, Md. Zachary Luhman has been appointed director of residence life. Luhman, who earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in higher education administration from Boston College, will be responsible for managing all aspects of student residences on and off campus. More than 740 students live on campus and, due to at-capacity residence halls resulting from increased enrollment, 120 additional students will be living in College-leased apartments nearby. He and his wife, who is a student in a doctoral program at The Johns Hopkins University, will live in one of the two campus-leased apartment complexes. Luhman most recently served as the director of campus life and housing operations at Bay State College in Boston. Margherite Powell has been named the College’s new financial aid director. Powell, who has more than three decades of experience in higher education and financial aid, will oversee financial aid services for students from federal, state, institutional and private sources. Her most recent position was corporate director of financial aid at MedVance Institute in West Palm Beach, Fla. Prior to that she was the dean for student services and student financial planning at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Powell earned a bachelor’s degree in organization leadership from Palm Beach Atlantic, where she will also complete a master’s degree in organizational management this year. President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., at the recep- Hood Student Receives Summer Fellowship to Study in Munich, Germany Rising sophomore Dieter Brummond, a prospective German major, was one of only students from colleges selected to participate in the Munich Summer Fellows Program this spring. In May Dieter traveled to Munich to learn about the city and its surroundings, the Ludwig Maximilian University, undergraduate research opportunities, and the Junior Year in Munich program organized by Wayne State University, according to Scott E. Pincikowski, Ph.D., associate professor of German, who nominated Dieter for the fellowship. Fewer than percent of nominated students are chosen for this by-invitation-only program, which rewards talented freshman students of German and encourages them to continue with their studies of German throughout their undergraduate education. “Dieter has a bright future in German’” Pincikowski said. “He has a talent for the German language, which is equaled by his enthusiasm for learning it.
