The competition for such gifted faculty is intense, and retaining them is a challenge, according to Robert N. Funk, Ph.D., provost and dean of the faculty. “Every one of us who has studied with a great professor mirrors somewhere in our behavior and world view the example of that professor,” Funk said. “Their impact on students is immense, whether it is personal attention in the classroom, advice on internships, sideby-side interaction during a summer research project or critiquing an honors paper.” One way to retain outstanding faculty is to establish an endowed chair, a position that is funded in perpetuity and covers the cost of a full professor position, including salary and benefits. Endowed chairs enhance the overall funds available to support the work of all faculty. One of the goals of the upcoming campaign is to fund additional chairs in more than one discipline. 1985 1985 1987 1989 2000 2008
