HOOD MAGAZINE | WINTER 2008-09 Participation: 23.85% Total Class Dollars: $4,620 Linda “Lynn” MacDonough Morrow 240 Lions Hill Road, Apt. E401 State College, PA 16803-1881 (814) 237-5858 LMorrow@psu.edu Sad news—we lost two of our classmates this fall. Eloise “Bunny” Burn Scott died Sept. 7 and Caroline “Care” Dickely Heeks passed on Oct. 28. Our condolences to husbands Don Scott and Bill Heeks and to the Heeks’ children. Our condolences also to Regina Schlank Pyle whose husband Tom died July 15, 2007. Margo Friedman Friedman and Sid make frequent drives from their Wellesley, Mass., home to Connecticut to visit their daughter and family in Weston and their son and family in Fairfield. Margo teaches ESL at Boston Univ. and works in the library at Babson College. Candee Mack Westdorp went to two high school 50th reunions (public and private). She says it was wonderful to go back and see friends from elementary and high school. Judy Hammond Blatchford says “we’re still traveling and enjoying retirement, which allowed us to stay at our place in the Adirondacks well into October this year.” Debbie Patterson Clark wrote, “June—attended 50th high school reunion; July—attended my 9th choral symposium in New Hampshire; August—took a glider ride; September—first grandchild born.” Barb Kirby Stewart and Paul are home in Maine after a wonderful six weeks touring Utah, Colorado and New Mexico in their RV. Susan Shinnick Hossfeld took a three-week trip to Ireland where they met many friendly, interesting people and had frequent rain. That’s why Ireland is so green! Eight years ago Penny Misirian Mardoian and Art built a year-round home in Maine. Their son and grandchildren spend the summer nearby in the cottage in which Penny grew up. Penny is semi-retired from teaching private piano lessons. She will have her 40th recital in May. Betty Wright M.A. ’90 writes that she and Jack still fly locally and away on adventures. Jack is the pilot and built his plane, an RV 6. It’s the airplane equivalent of a red and white Corvette. Gail Dawson Clarke says she is “still single (although had a close call last year— whew) and still working with gnarly kids delinquent kids in a diversion program.” Gail’s son is in Seattle and planning to relocate to Tampa because he misses the sun. Gail lives in sunny Florida and misses the fun of Seattle! She lives close to the Tampa church where Sally Zimmerman is pastor. Gail told Sally, “I knew you before you got holy.” The eldest grandson of Marjorie Simmons Carlson is a freshman at Univ. of Maryland and absolutely LOVES IT! Her other son Dr. Jeffrey Carlson, and the six other orthopedic physicians in his practice, have a brand new, state-of-the-art building. Mary Carhart Trolinger’s apart- ment had water damage from Hurricane Ike. The walls and ceilings in the living room, guest bath and utility room had to be redone. This is the 6th year that Jan Zwinck Morrison and Steve have traveled between Raleigh and Milbridge, Maine. The best part of their Maine summer home is the opportunity it provides to reconnect with family and friends. Ann Holmes Flatt and JP took three great trips this year—one to Paris (via Iceland) and two to JP’s Swiss homeland. Ann’s mother had live music and dancing at her 104th birthday party. She danced! Lynn MacDonough Morrow hosted the wedding reception for her son and his bride at her farm Labor Day weekend. She visited Italy for a tour called “Walking through Tuscany.” The calories expended on walks balanced the calories consumed in pasta, cheese, wine and gelato. Barbara Arthur Pretzsch requests that we look for pictures and memorabilia to help the alumnae staff put together a super 50th reunion booklet for us. Anyone with pictures, please e-mail Bobbi at barbarapret@yahoo.com. It has been such fun surprising some people with a phone call, note or e-mail who hadn’t heard from me for 45 years. Lots of the news centered on births, deaths, travel and grandchildren. For some there is still gainful employment and for others lots of volunteer work. So sit back and enjoy catching up. Carolyn Maxwell had spoken to her roomie Janet Phillips Gardner who has not been well but retains her sense of humor and positive attitude. Carolyn said that Margie Kipp Surbeck (“who looks as stunning as ever”) and Richard visited Janet in Maryland this summer. Carolyn enjoys entertaining the Surbecks when they visit in California. One son and his wife bought a house in Palm Desert where the family gathered for Thanksgiving; her younger son got married this summer and the oldest grandson just turned 16. Marcie Smith White and her husband Derek have lived in Yardley, Pa., for 38 years and have both retired. They enjoy church and community activities and birding when traveling. They visited Mary Batten Preston, a friend of Marcie’s since childhood, in Wyoming this summer for Mary’s daughter’s wedding. Kay Rose Oram ’64 attends Marcie’s church. The Whites are looking forward to heading south where they spend 2½ months in Naples, Fla., each winter. The big news from Sally Schaeffer Morse was the cruise she and Al took with their two daughters, their husbands and grandchildren, sailing out of Baltimore to Bermuda. She and Al are still singing in church and with the group Columbia Pro Cantare. Jo Cissel Doyle wrote that she and Jim are doing better after her illness and his falling off the wagon (church hayride) and hurting his shoulder. They came to Hood recently for Jo’s induction into the Hood College Athletic Hall of Fame. Congratulations to our own White Blazer Girl! Jo was happy to see Debbie Bentley Hall ’65 there. Jo still works as a librarian two mornings a week and enjoys book clubs, tai chi and yoga. Sue Hill Richards and Phil have lived in Scottsdale for 21 years and spend their summers in Minn., where they had lived for 20 years. They have three children and three grandchildren. Our sympathy to Sue and her family on the death of son Scott who died at age 45 of mylofibrosis and leukemia. They also had the joy of son Kip, 43, getting married. Sue enjoys traveling with Phil for his business which is in finance. He has written an industry book, “25 Secrets for Sustainable Success.” It’s no surprise that Louise Fisher Waynant, although retired as deputy superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools, is still teaching. She has been teaching in the graduate programs in the education department of Goucher College in Baltimore. Her latest endeavor is teaching a course online which she finds enjoyable. She participates in many church activities, including facilitating the Women’s Book Group. Her husband is still teaching in Maryland schools but is in a graduate program to get a degree in counseling and ultimately plans to be a psychologist. Her daughter and family live in Columbia, Md., close to Louise. Betty Siegmund Kirkner is widowed and lives in Reisterstown, Md., along with her son. Her daughter, a speech pathologist, and her family live in Westminster, Md. Betty has a retreat in Rehoboth at the beach, a place she and her family try to take advantage of once a month. Carol Joice Carty is also widowed, losing her husband to Alzheimer’s four years ago. She retired from the Bank of America and now works part time in a jewelry store as a bookkeeper. She enjoys spending time with her daughter and granddaughter. Katy Bienfang Curtis, who says she is divorced, has lived in Scottsdale for 33 years and is a real estate agent, and has seen a lot of growth there. Her family used to live on a ranch with horses but left that behind as her two daughters got older. Katy has two daughters and four grandchildren and sometimes travels to San Diego. She may look up Brenda Eklund Pearson there on her next trip. Our sympathy to Brenda on the recent death of her mother. Brenda has enjoyed many trips with her travel group, Friendship Force. The latest trip was to New Zealand for three weeks. She also went to Maui on what she called a “working vacation.”
