Verna Larson Lyons and her husband, living in Birmingham, are excited about their first grandchild—a boy—born in April. Verna said they do a lot of traveling, including a trip to India for three weeks, but now it is mostly flying to L.A. to see Oliver. She also fits in a lot of church work. Louise Thornton Burns had a recent encounter with a log while they were watching someone’s property and the log won. It broke her foot badly so she had pins, etc., and needed a wheelchair for a while. It was a freak accident where a log rolled off a Bobcat loader and she was in the way. She did substitute teaching for 20 years. Now she enjoys bridge, polo games and other “horse sports.” Sue Conner Lehman taught for a number of years before getting ordained in the Episcopal Church. She was the chaplain at Sweet Briar College in Virginia and retired in 2001 to the mountains of western Virginia. They realized that the weather there was more than they had bargained for. After a trip to see old friends in Cincinnati where they had lived previously, they decided to move back and are now living happily downtown. Betsy Hargreaves Rinker is still enjoying teaching microbiology at a community college. Her husband Bob, a graduate of the Naval Academy, retired from the service after 20 years, then worked in computers for 20. Even though he suffers from Agent Orange exposure he still keeps active with volunteer work. They have two sons—one in Washington and one in Atlanta—who are both in the computer field. Betsy has been a scuba diver since age 50. You go girl! Ann Carpenter Lindau has been on the town board in Cortlandt, N.Y., for 15 years, a job that takes a lot of her time. Ann graduated from UConn. She had lunch with Joan Fleming Cremin in NYC when Joan’s husband was running the marathon. Jan Scheurer Curry, a retired librarian, lives in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, with her husband Richard Rodda. Rick is a working writer who writes about music. They enjoy traveling and went to New Orleans and later to Antarctica for three weeks in December. Jan is in touch with Babs Cole and Jan Mason Poole who is living in Davis, Calif., and was remarried last year. Carolyn Matusiewski Cannava wrote, “I am still principal at Soldotna Elementary School in Alaska but also the grandmother of eight. My children and grandchildren keep me busy.
